When did you meet your first guide and mentor in business? For me, it was in April 1977 at Long Crendon County Combined Primary School, over a game of tennis-ball football at morning break. After a messy parental divorce and a couple of years away from the village where I was born, I returned to the school after a two-year gap. My previous friends had moved on, and I found solace and friendship with a boy who’d arrived since I’d been away. Last weekend – unbelievably more than 45 years since we first met – I had the huge pleasure of spending a couple of days with Peter Russian and his family in their new home in Brookline, MA, on the fringes of Boston. Here we are, riding the T-line to eat lobster rolls in Quincy Market. We had fun – of course. Catching up, learning about their new adventure in business as well as family life, kids adjusting to new schools, and the travails of dealing with Fall leaves. But for the past few years, as we’ve both been actively building and scaling our businesses, we’ve developed a new relationship. We’ve become accountability buddies, probing and testing one another, offering guidance and perspective on fortnightly calls that we term “Yalta”. Transatlantic Zooms usually, enabling us both to focus ON the business rather than getting trapped IN the business. Something – I’d wager London to a house brick – neither of us would have imagined we’d be doing back in 1977, when our minds were more focused on the day’s holiday we’d be getting for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. #accountability #businessplanning #businessdevelopment

** Merry Christmas from the Front 2023 Dear All May I start by wishing you the Merriest of Christmases. I truly wish we could have celebrated some of it with you and raised a glass at least, but our fight to save Simpsons continues and we remain determined to ensure that our little piece of #cityoflondon #history is not extinguished. Simpsons is an original part of the historic footprint of the #city and as we cannot truly know today without understanding our yesterdays, these links to our shared #heritage are significant. We do not want to set the past in aspic though, we want to see it alive and lived, reverberating as Simpsons did. #Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire Sadly, our legal fire, is a slow burn. Our case has been listed for a 4-day trail; For those of you, unsure and in the belief this is just a rental dispute - it is not as pedestrian. The litigation focuses on the #unlawful handling of the matter by the Freeholder & Agents #hartnelltaylorcook. Our case has significant legal merit, endorsed by solicitors, Kings Council and demonstrated by the 4-day listing given by the Judge. There is real risk of damages now against the owners as we should not have been closed. The case could list in the 2nd half of next year, but even then, it is likely that the initial outcome will be disputed by either side and next Christmas will be as this one, with the lights out and a void sat in the heart of the City I feel like a climatologist watching glaciers melt in real time to report on potential climate change. Still, as slow lawyers get fat - so grows our confidence and resolve. We will not give up on our position and see 38 1/2 Cornhill as home, but Simpsons Tavern opened 300 years ago in Ball Court. As such, this year should have been a headline year. Instead, we are being told by a former potential bidder that the #propertyagents are attempting to imply misguidedly the freehold sale offers a continuation - as if when you bought the building, you also bought Simpsons the business. We remain aggrieved here as in truth, they are only selling a shell as the beating Heart, name and the identity exists elsewhere within us and will be maintained by us As such, in the New Year we are starting to look to relocate temporarily to demonstrate that point. We have been closed for over a year now, unnecessarily, and too long out of the consciousness is dangerous for any business. We have had initial conversations with #commercialproperty agents and are working together a plan, but I will report further on this next year Until then From my heart to yours - Merry Christmas.
