The city fills with flowers and thousands of trucks swarm South to redistribute them all over the US. "There's not a lot of freight in the South Florida markets," Robert Rouse, product manager for truckload freight marketplace and data analytics platform DAT Freight & Analytics, told Insider. "But when those flowers start moving, man, it gets crazy." Usually, Miami is a "freight desert," or a market that consumes more than it produces. For the majority of the year, there aren't that many things produced in Miami and the surrounding areas that need to be picked up by trucks and hauled up North. That all changes as Valentine's day approaches. 🌹 The overwhelming majority of Valentine's day roses and carnations come from Colombia and Ecuador, which are conveniently just a few hours plane ride from Miami. Miami International Airport receives 91% of all flowers imported in the US. As Valentine's Day approaches, we are preparing for peak fresh-cut flower season here in Miami. The Miami International Airport (MIA) is the heart of flower imports to the U.S. all year round, but activity ramps up considerably in the lead-up to Cupid's favorite day. During this time of year, the FedEx cargo hub at MIA transforms into a floral haven with daily flower shipments from farms in Colombia and Ecuador.   The shipment process begins the same day the flowers are cut, ensuring we can consolidate multiple bunches into one shipment. This streamlines the transportation process and allows us to release them through customs as a single package. Once at MIA, our dedicated in-house Customs and Clearance facilities allow for a faster inspection process, and our 72,000 square-foot cold chain facility provides a controlled storage environment for temperature-sensitive bouquets, ensuring that every petal stays fresh and vibrant throughout the journey.   Projections indicate that U.S. consumers will spend $14.2 billion on #Valentinesday gifts, with spending records expected for flowers, so remember the role international shipping and #logistics play in bringing joy and beauty to your loved ones.

Valentine's Day freight may be a short-lived burst of love, but it's a potent shot of love for your bank account. With careful planning and smart choices, truckers can reap the rewards of this seasonal surge. As February kicks off, Miami becomes the focal point for floral freight, managing almost 90% of imported Valentine's Day roses and carnations in the U.S. In the seven weeks leading to February 14th, approximately 750 truckloads per day will make their way northward from Miami. The uptick in demand for reefer carriers typically starts with a 25% week-over-week increase in spot load posts during the last week of January, as brokers and shippers seek additional capacity ahead of Valentine's Day. While the peak in volume shipments usually occurs in the first week of February, peak rates tend to happen closer to Valentine's Day itself. This preference is driven by customers who prioritize the freshness of their roses, making last-day deliveries the most lucrative. Around 60% of Valentine's Day roses are shipped from the Miami market during the first two weeks of February, leading to a 30% increase in load posts and a 20-cent spike in average reefer rates. Based on available data, rates during the first week of February last year increased by 9%, with the Northeast region experiencing the highest growth at a 15% rate spike. This year, a similar rate growth is anticipated, albeit with slightly lower spot volume. Comparing the volume in Week 2 of 2024 with the same week in 2023, a 10% decrease in postings on major load boards is evident. Following the seasonal trend, each week is expected to see a 30-40% growth in spot volume, with Fridays being the optimal days for pickups. The current average RPM from the Miami, FL market stands at $1.64, with a tendency for additional decline during the current week. The Role No experience necessary this role will involve walking down the vines working as part of a team, snipping off bunches of grapes using the snippers supplied and placing the bunches into the crates located on the floor. This role involves a lot of walking each day and working in most weather conditions, therefore a waterproof jacket is essential to have to hand, along with wellies or comfortable hardy waterproof walking boots. This role would suit someone who is physically fit and able as you will be on your feet for most the day and standing for long periods of time. Working as part on the annual harvest is great fun, we have many people returning to work the harvest year upon year, of course it is fab to support your local vineyard with their harvest season, but it is also a great way to meet new people from the local community, it s also fab for exercise and for getting your daily step count in. It is also absolutely brilliant for mental health and wellbeing, as who doesn t love working submerged by the most breath-taking of surroundings! Things to take with you Please ensure you have enough food and drink for the whole day, there are not any local shops nearby so please arrive with plenty of food and a refillable water bottle, there will be water stations on site where you can refill your bottles throughout the day. Please ensure you have comfortable hardy waterproof footwear (ideally not trainers unless you re a fan of soggy feet!), we would recommend wellies and a pair of waterproof walking boots to change
