Here’s an interesting question for donors to ask non-profits: “How do you innovate?” As we see it, any organization that wants to be a catalyst for change cannot get set in their ways. Innovation has to be part of the culture and it’s one of the metrics that we’d like to be measured by.

At BEN, we’re all about seeking new ways to expand learning opportunities for public school teachers and students. New things we introduced into our 2023 programs: collaborations with Bermuda Zoological Society and Planet Math to reduce transportation costs, four new field trip expeditions around the island, an expansion to our BEN Book Club for 4-5 year olds and increased professional development offerings for teachers.   However, the real game changer has been our summer reading program. This is an intervention program targeting students in Grade 2 who have not fully mastered phonics and the alphabetic code. With limited spaces available to just one year group, we wondered how this summer program could make more impact on reading challenges in schools. Our solution: to create five paid internships for education undergraduates giving them first-hand experience of evidence-based reading teaching methods.  We couldn’t have done this without the support of our summer program host, Somersfield Academy Bermuda and the generous support of Fortitude Re and Centennial Bermuda Foundation.  Innovation isn’t just a buzzword: it’s the backbone of our mission to build a professional learning community that expands opportunities for Bermuda’s public school teachers and students. #schoolsuccess #educationalleadership #bermuda

According to the National Institutes of Health, "School-based programs are positively associated with stable employment and full-time work while work-based programs most consistently increase the likelihood that youth with disabilities will be employed in jobs that provide fringe benefits. Analyses also indicate that – once individuals with disabilities are stably employed – they can be employed in “good” jobs that provide employee benefits." The Transition Academy put this research into action by partnering with Diversity Placement Services and Central High School to provide summer jobs for students at Central High School, Hogan Preparatory Academy and the Kauffman School. For 71% of the hard working youth, it was their first job. We look forward to building upon this pilot program and ensuring students get real world experience to prepare them for employment success. #specialeducation #disabilityemployment #realworldlearning #careerpathways
