#ThrowbackTuesday On April 6, 2024, some of the attorneys and staff in DSK Law’s Melbourne office (including Brett Miller, David C Netzley II, Isaac Allen, and Nicole Campello) participated in the 2024 Trash Bash—a community cleanup event aimed at preserving the beauty of downtown Melbourne, FL. In conjunction with The Great American Cleanup, the event was hosted by Melbourne Main Street, Keep Brevard Beautiful, City of Melbourne, and the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce. With a group of 74 volunteers, this year’s event resulted in the collection of 86 bags of trash and 18 bags of recyclable materials. Great job! #melbournetrashbash #keepbrevardbeautiful #cityofmelbourne #mebournereguonalchamber

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced budget cuts that, if enacted, will essentially wipe out #communitycomposting infrastructure in #NYC, as well as threaten widely used #foodwaste drop-off sites operated by GrowNYC at Greenmarkets throughout the city. “NYC has long been a leader not only in #composting, but community composting … that keeps the composting process and #compost use local, while offering community engagement and education opportunities,” according to Institute for Local Self-Reliance. ILSR’s 2022 Community Composter Census identified New York as home to the largest concentration of community composters in the U.S.—a thriving ecosystem of local businesses, environmental nonprofits, and neighborhood gardens. #climate

COLLECTIVESUN OUT & ABOUT! Last week, our CollectiveSun team took a step out of the office and into our sunny neighborhood for a special event: a Community Clean-Up Walk! This initiative was more than just a walk; it was a team lead demonstration of our commitment to our core values of Community and Simplicity. Equipped with garbage grabbers, recycled bags, sunscreen and intention, we set out to make a positive impact. What surprised us the most was the sheer amount of litter that had gone unnoticed in our daily routines. In just one block, we managed to fill an entire bag with trash. This eye-opening experience highlighted how small efforts can lead to significant changes in our surroundings. By coming together to clean up our local area, we not only enhanced the beauty of our neighborhood, and we also reinforced the importance of taking collective responsibility for our environment. We encourage everyone, whether local or remote, to find ways to contribute to your communities. Organize a clean-up in your area, share your efforts with us! Thank you to everyone who participated in the clean-up walk and to those supporting from afar. Let’s keep the momentum going and continue to make positive impact, one small step at a time! #CollectiveSunOutAndAbout #CommunityCleanUp #TeamEffort #MakeADifference #SustainabilityInAction #CommunityImpact #TeamValues #SmallEffortsBigImpact #EnvironmentalResponsibility #CollectiveResponsibility #LocalImpact #NeighborhoodCleanup #ActLocally #SimplicityInAction

After a difficult year of budget cuts, the NYC Council and Mayor have agreed to restore funding for the city's community composting programs in the FY25 budget. This will cover longstanding groups like GrowNYC as well as expand support to a broader range of organizations, including microhauler Bk Rot and The Brotherhood Sister Sol. The $112.4 billion budget is a win for small-scale composters, who faced the complete elimination of funds in late 2023. Crucially, the Council has ensured this funding can't be touched by the administration, providing more stability for these critical services. As the city prepares to roll out curbside organics collection this fall, this restored funding will be essential to helping communities ramp up composting capacity. It's an important step towards diverting more organic waste from landfills and building a more sustainable New York. #composting #sustainability #nycpolicy #wastemanagement

Sustainability and circular economy professional building systems that improve our lives and the world around us
Anyone know what the definition of insanity is? 🙋♀️ I'll go. It's doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, and it's exactly what the Parker administration is perpetuating here with its 13 weeks of block cleaning and no follow-up plans for how address systemic waste, litter, illegal dumping and other quality of life issues that have plagued Philly for decades. We've seen this movie before, and it always ends the same way--with perpetually littered and dumped on neighborhoods and disillusioned Philadelphians. We are long past the point where we need real, systemic solutions to these problems. Short-term band-aids like this 13-week program won't create the lasting change we need, and we needed change yesterday. Furthermore, the "if you're not with us, you're against us" rhetoric spouted by Parker at the end of this clip is exactly the kind of rhetoric used by autocrats (and a certain recent U.S. president) who want to silence anyone that believes the solutions on offer are inadequate. It's divisive and dangerous and frankly, just plain gross. At Circular Philadelphia, we continue to advocate for creative, innovative solutions that shift us away from the status quo and towards lasting change that benefits all Philadelphians. Yes, these solutions require more work and leadership than simply sticking your finger in the air and proclaiming "One Philly!" But without them, eventually we won't HAVE a Philly that anyone wants to call home. I am proud of my co-director Nic Esposito for being willing to continue to speak out about the urgency of enacting real solutions, and I implore my fellow non-profit leaders who care about issues related to waste, dumping and climate to join him in speaking up about how this mayoral administration must do better.

Let's prioritize cleanliness in our neighborhoods! 🏡 Our neighborhood is more than just a place to live; it's our home and the space where our families grow. Keeping it clean and free of litter is crucial for several reasons: 1. Public Health: Litter can spread diseases and pests, affecting everyone, especially children and the elderly. 2. Aesthetic Appeal and Property Value: A clean neighborhood is visually appealing and increases property values. 3. Environmental Impact: Litter pollutes the environment and threatens wildlife. 4. Sense of Community: Keeping the neighborhood clean fosters collaboration and strengthens bonds among neighbors. How can we contribute? • Reduce, reuse, and recycle. • Participate in community clean-up events. • Educate and motivate our neighbors. By working together, we can make our neighborhood a clean and prosperous place for all. Let's unite to build a more sustainable and healthy future! #CleanNeighborhood #Community #Sustainability

Today, I participated in a community cleanup program where the local councilor, some municipal workers and volunteers like myself were clearing sediment from the road drainages in King Williams Town. Just an hour of your time can make a difference, being a active member of society is important. #communityservice #volunteerism #environment #cleanup #stormwatermanagement #pollutionprevention

Chiquita Canyon Landfill recently provided updates on its community relief fund, which was set up amidst legal challenges and a significant environmental issue. A high-temperature reaction site at the landfill generates approximately 1 million gallons of potentially toxic leachate per week, along with landfill gases that contribute to pervasive odors in the area. This has led to around 2,000 monthly complaints from nearby residents and ongoing lawsuits seeking to shut down the facility. The landfill's community relief fund has disbursed nearly $978,850 between March and May, assisting residents with various costs, potentially including relocation expenses due to the landfill's impact. Applications for assistance have been steadily increasing each month. Despite the fund's activity, concerns about transparency persist. The landfill has faced criticism for not disclosing the specific formula used to determine eligibility and allocate funds. Residents and community leaders have expressed frustration over the lack of transparency, emphasizing the need for clear guidelines on how funding decisions are made. In response to these concerns, the landfill has announced additional in-person meetings to provide more information and address questions from residents. Nonprofits we believe in: Every project we do requires wood. We are continually challenging ourselves to find alternatives, or use less, or repurpose, or find suppliers that do things with a small and sustainable footprint. And while this is undoubtedly worth the effort, we have to think harder about what is truly sustainable. We have to approach what we do as builders from a place of stewardship and be more responsible than ever with our use of building materials in all their forms. To this end, we partnered with the to offset the use of wood in all our projects. Starting in spring of 2022, we started offsetting 100% of the construction wood used in our projects by funding the planting of trees locally with WMTP. Unlike construction timber, the trees will not be harvested and will continue to grow in protected local forests to provide numerous benefits such as cleaning our water/air, capturing carbon from the atmosphere, improving local habitat, and enhancing the health & resilience of our local community. If that's of interest to you, we suggest you check them out. It's a mission worth embarking upon.
