The Access to Justice initiative has long provided free #legalservices to low-income families on housing, education, disability, employment, immigration and #publicbenefits matters. June 1, 1921. The prosperous Tulsa neighborhood of Greenwood was attacked by a bloodthirsty mob, intent on inflicting destruction and terror. Greenwood was known as the "Black Wall Street." It was full of prosperous black owned businesses, and as much as it was a powerful icon for black people in the area and the nation, it was an object of scorn and jealously for many of the less affluent white people, and many of greater means as well. While exact details of what set off the events of that day are unknown, it stemmed from a ride in an elevator between a black man named Dick Rowland, and a white woman named Sarah Page, and evidence suggests that he merely accidentally bumped into her. What followed was the complete destruction of 35 city blocks and a death count that is estimated to be as high as 300. The massacre was called a riot as a pretext for insurance companies to deny the insurance claims of the many harmed businesses and residents. As horrible as the events of the time were, it's barely a drop in the bucket when you consider the extent of the harm and the damage that slavery and racism have caused in the past, and still cause in our current times. It's vital that we acknowledge both the legacy of slavery and racism, as well as their continuing effects in our day. But saying these things are real and terrible is not about demonizing the race of those who practiced them. Racism and slavery are evil. White people enslaved black people. But that doesn't mean that white people are evil. Nonetheless, if you can't acknowledge the facts in those first two sentences, then you are contributing to the problem. Recognizing the realities that have existed, and continue to persist, is not about internalizing guilt Nobody's saying that you should be ashamed to be white. In fact, it's perfectly okay to like being white. You should just also have love, compassion, and respect for people of other races and cultures as well.
