A real pleasure to work with National Trust and Artes Mundi on this work which explores Powis Castle's colonial relationship with India. With so little colonial history on our curriculum, I realise how important these historic properties become as sites of learning. One of Dorking’s charms is its rich history. And this piece is shared by The Dorking Museum, who always thought that the Museum building was the only foundry in Dorking, but it has recently been discovered that there was in fact another one on the High Street. A foundry is a facility that manufactures metal castings, and Sauberge operated a coppersmiths and ironmakers on the High Street until 1895 when Stone & Turner took over the licence. Today, Sainsbury's stands on the site of these two historical buildings. This photograph captures a glimpse of the building during World War Two, and showcases the metal tank traps of that time. Earth to Earth by Chris Ma “Despite one’s lifetime achievements, everything will eventually return to the earth. This is the fleeting nature of life.” Chris Ma’s insights into his “Earth to Earth” artwork showcased the juxtaposition of porcelain clay and red bricks, highlighting life’s dichotomies of fragility and strength, one red, one white; one thick, one thin; one firm, one soft; one addressing objects, the other humanity. Innovation at its finest
Brian Koelz is a conservation technician who is responsible for matting and framing all the works on paper presented in SLAM’s galleries. He is also tasked with finding or, in some cases, constructing the frames you see on paintings and works on paper throughout the Museum. A reinstallation of SLAM’s medieval galleries, Global Connections opens this year and features a French, mid-15th-century manuscript called a book of hours, which was meant for intimate devotional use. Koelz created a custom design, allowing the work to be seen at roughly the same angle at which one of its previous owners might have held it. More than 80 model pagodas – hand-crafted at a Jesuit-run orphanage workshop in Shanghai and exported to a 1915 international exposition in San Francisco – are now part of Singapore's National Collection. And, of course, they got the star treatment since arriving last year. It was my first time visiting the Heritage Conservation Centre, an unassuming, silver-shelled facility that houses Singapore's prized artefacts and artworks. In this labyrinthine building tucked away on Jurong Port Road, gloved conservators get up close to artefacts – some centuries-old – and do the hands-on work of readying these cultural objects for the public eye. These 84 pagoda models will be part of a year-long exhibition, Pagoda Odyssey 1915: From Shanghai To San Francisco, opening at the ACM (Asian Civilisations Museum) on May 31. In March, I went behind-the-scenes with lead conservator Leon Sim to learn how his team of seven spent six months conserving these century-old artefacts that reveal an interesting story about China-United States exchange, the glamour of the international expo format as well as the marvel of this Chinese architectural form. Another interesting cross-cultural point, which I did not mention in the story, is that the architectural form of the pagoda (which often have a religious function, often Buddhist, sometimes Taoist) was inspired by the South Asian hemispherical architectural form of the stupa. So these objects – along with the spread of Buddhism (Happy Vesak Day by the way!) – can tell a fascinating global story via Asia, which has been at the core of some of the most recent shows at the ACM. The public life of such cultural artefacts are often visible and celebrated when they go on exhibition, but they also have a curious "private life" that are privy to a small group of people – conservators being one such group.
