Today, we had the privilege of conducting a Theatre Fire Marshal Course at the historic His Majesty's Theatre. As we reflect on the vital role of fire safety, it's fitting to remember two significant events in the theatre's history that underscore the importance of our training. 🔥 His Majesty’s Theatre has a storied past, the site has been associated with a playhouse longer than any other theatre in London, except for the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Throughout its history, the theatre has seen four different buildings and numerous name changes. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1789. It was rebuilt and became the largest theatre in England. However, on December 6, 1867, the theatre suffered another devastating fire, which destroyed the venue in less than an hour. The blaze was ferocious and swift, reducing the grand structure to a hollow shell of stone outer walls. The interior, made largely of wood and filled with flammable materials such as stage sets, costumes, and seating, was rapidly consumed by the flames. These tragic events not only destroyed a beloved cultural institution but also highlighted the urgent need for advancements in fire safety and prevention. It’s budget time for many of us, the time where we’re setting our budgets for 2024/25.  And this year there are some difficult choices to make. We need to make savings in our budgets because of reduced funding; increased running costs; increased cost-of-living and salaries and rising inflation….   Often when we’re making budget savings, the people budget lines are the first to be reduced or even to be cut completely. So, today, I have a question for you. Can this be the year that that changes?  Can this be the year we choose to protect those budget lines and by doing so really demonstrate that we are invested in our people. That we are investing in their development; in their training; in their welfare. Can we acknowledge that valuing our teams and so retaining them is infinitely more cost-effective than watching them leave and having to recruit again, having to train again? Can this be the year we do it differently? National Arts Theatre, the DEN of creative performances in the heart of Lagos. I went there with family as a child. I have seen Olu Jacobs, Joke Silva, RMD, Oga Bello, Aluwe, Baba Sala and many actors on stage. There were musical and cultural performances as well, King Sunny Ade, Lijadu sisters and others representing different genre of music and tribes in Nigeria 🇳🇬. Performer's Rights are hardly discussed in Nigeria 🇳🇬. Most discussion focus on Copyright with little or nothing on related or neighbouring rights. Expressions of Folklore and Performances are regarded as related or neighbouring rights. World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) defines: 'Related rights, also referred to as neighboring rights, protect the legal interests of certain persons and legal entities that contribute to making works available to the public or that produce subject matter which, while not qualifying as works under the copyright systems of all countries, contains sufficient creativity or technical and organizational skill to justify recognition of a copyright-like property right. The law of related rights deems that the productions that result from the activities of such persons and entities merit legal protection as they are related to the protection of works of authorship under copyright. Some laws make clear, however, that the exercise of related rights should leave intact, and in no way affect, the protection of copyright.' So related rights is an extention of copyright but not copyright. It is a place for performers to seek protection. The Copyright Act of Nigeria 🇳🇬 2022 has provisions on performance. LIVE PERFORMANCE. The next assignment will be on performance and it is dedicated to a friend that recently passed on. A huge loss to academia.
