Work plays a crucial role in our #mentalhealth, providing identity, purpose, and of course, income. However, it can also negatively impact us due to challenges like bullying, harassment, discrimination, inequality, racism, heavy workloads, and toxic work environments. This year, the theme for #WorldMentalHealthDay focuses on “Mental Health at Work”, emphasizing the responsibility employers have to safeguard not just the physical but also the mental well-being of their employees. At the World Health Organization, many of my colleagues and I are proud of the work we do. But like any high-stakes environment, WHO can be a stressful place to work, with heavy workloads and intense pressure. To better support our team, we’ve introduced several initiatives: - Expanding access to counselling services; - Increasing discussions with mental health experts on topics like stress management and work-life balance; - Digital tools that offer self-care advice and stress management tips; - Promoting open conversations through regular open-door sessions. To my colleagues and any employee out there: If you're struggling with your mental health, don’t stay silent. It’s OK to talk about it and seek help. And to employers and managers: Prioritize the mental well-being of your teams. Everyone deserves access to the support they need.
