I didn't do real ear measurement for years. When I started, it changed my career. Here's the story: We never used real ear in my externship, or nearly any of my clinical rotations. About a year into my first clinical job, we bought a system. I hated it. → Fittings backfired. → Patients didn't like the sound. → There was no one around me to teach me how to do it better. I developed a negative connotation. When I went into practice on my own, I didn't even buy the equipment. I "knew how to make adjustments" to compensate for patient concerns. But, I was taking students, and one of them guilted me into it 😂 I wanted to be a good role model, so I learned how to use it. → I did multiple trainings with the equipment and hearing aid manufacturers. → I committed to fitting my patients with it every time. → I learned how to modify the initial fitting for comfort and daily use. I was shocked. Manufacturer settings were ALWAYS wrong out of the box... When I refit current HA users, they were blown away by the sound. I became an evangelist. → I integrated it into our standard treatment process. → Developed a rehabilitative program around it. → Learned how to tell the story of its impact on treatment outcomes. The Result? ☑ My confidence improved ☑ Treatment acceptance went up ☑ Returns went down ☑ We got more referrals ☑ Marketing was easier ☑ Positive reviews grew Now I only work with clients who either currently do real ear or are committed to starting. We only deserve to grow our practices if we're willing to grow into someone who deserves a successful practice. Sometimes that means doing things that are in our patients' best interest, but uncomfortable for us.
