Where you live matters when it comes to the options available for maternity care. Maternity care deserts are counties where there is no access to birthing hospitals, birth centers offering obstetric care, or obstetric providers. "Nowhere to Go: Maternity Care Deserts in the US" reveals that over 35% of counties are considered maternity care deserts. What's changing? - Health equity joins the criteria for Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care, ensuring recognized providers excel in both quality and equity. - Stringent equity measures aligned with BCBSA's national health equity strategy prioritize closing care gaps affecting Black women, who are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes. Benefits for everyone include: - Higher quality and safer maternity care. - Reduced racial and ethnic disparities in care. - Cost savings for BDC+ facilities. - Improved birthing experiences through doula support. - Enhanced preparedness for obstetric emergencies. MBRRACE-UK has published two Perinatal Confidential Enquiry reports, Thursday 14 December, which identify where improvements in care may have made a difference to outcomes for women and their babies, alongside inequalities in maternity care received by Black and Asian. Supporting personalised, safe and compassionate maternity care is a priority for the College, and we will now carefully consider the recommendations in these reports, so that we can take these forward through our work as educators, in our clinical guidance and our quality improvement programmes. We know that maternity teams are working tirelessly at a time of unprecedented demand, with many teams understaffed and impacted by high vacancy rates. These pressures are undoubtedly impacting the care that some women and their families receive. It is crucial that the Government commits to sufficient, long-term NHS investment for staff recruitment, retention and training, which underpins safe and compassionate care for patients.
