Telehealth advocates are once again rallying to extend the waiver on telemedicine prescriptions for controlled medications, with a focus on mental health and substance use disorder treatments. As the DEA prepares a new rule, the uncertainty has raised concerns for patients and providers alike. CTeL & The Alliance for Connected Care is urging the White House and Congress to extend the pandemic-era waiver by two years, allowing the DEA time to create a long-overdue registration process. Without this extension, access to critical care for underserved and rural populations could face serious challenges. This fight has been ongoing since 2008, following the Ryan Haight Act. Despite repeated calls, the DEA has yet to create a streamlined process for telemedicine prescriptions. In 2023, a proposed draft rule was met with criticism for being overly restrictive. Now, a new draft is pending White House review, but advocates fear it may deal a blow to telemedicine. While the pursuit of growth and expansion is important, it must never compromise our core values and ethical obligations. Please read and re-share to SPREAD THE WORD. 🚨 With insufficient time before the end of the year to enact a special registration rule, the only path forward to avoid the Telehealth Cliff is to extend the flexibilities further. This will allow time for the DEA to draft a new proposed rule (ideally doing so in collaboration with a taskforce comprised of practicing clinicians and industry stakeholders).
