Kudos and thank you to VNA's Commissioner on Nursing Practice Mesha Jones, MSN, RN, who alongside Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, Ph.D., MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, President of the American Nurses Association, and many other registered nurses recently advocated for nurses at ANA's 2023 Hill Day! Among the crucial legislative issues supported by the ANA is the I CAN ACT, aiming to allow healthcare providers, beside physicians, to offer specific services under Medicare and Medicaid. The proposed bill has three key provisions: (1) enabling nurse practitioners or physician assistants to meet documentation requirements for Medicare coverage of special shoes for diabetic individuals; (2) streamlining the supervision capabilities of physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and clinical nurse specialists for Medicare cardiac, intensive cardiac, and pulmonary rehabilitation programs; and (3) granting nurse practitioners the authority to certify the need for inpatient hospital services under both Medicare and Medicaid.

The Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Provider Preview Reports have been updated and are now available in iQIES. These reports contain provider performance scores for quality measures, which will be published on Care Compare and Provider Data Catalog (PDC) during the October 2024 refresh. The new assessment-based measure added to the Preview Reports is Discharge Function Score. The three assessment-based measures removed from the Preview Reports are: (1) Application of Percent of Long-Term Care Hospital (LTCH) Patients with an Admission and Discharge Functional Assessment and a Care Plan That Addresses Function, (2) SNF Functional Outcome Measure: Change in Self-Care Score for Skilled Nursing Facility Residents, and (3) SNF Functional Outcome Measure: Change in Mobility Score for Skilled Nursing Facility Residents. https://lnkd.in/gHJp4Amc

It's exciting to see #AI being used to address nursing burnout in healthcare settings. Virtual nursing, which deals with tasks like admissions, discharges, and patient education, has the potential to benefit both healthcare providers and patients. When specialized virtual team members take care of these tasks, it frees up other nurses for an extra two hours per shift to directly care for patients. Additionally, virtual nursing can be expanded to include other tasks in the future, like assessing patients' pain levels. #NurseBurnout #HealthcareInnovation #VirtualNurses

'Those people aren’t smart enough to be trusted...' Last year, at a gathering of fellow nurses, someone directed that statement at me. We were convened to learn how to educate and empower Ohio nurses in shaping state policy and legislation. Amid discussions on tackling the staffing crisis, I delved into the role and potential of Medication Aides (MA-Cs) in Ohio's acute care facilities. A bit of context: In 2006, non-nurses were authorized to administer certain medications in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and residential care facilities. What began as a pilot program soon expanded statewide by 2009. Yet, since then, progress in reevaluating and expanding the scope of medication aides has stagnated. All that said, the current staffing shortage is much more nuanced than numbers. Its complexities cannot be solved with such a narrow solution. Still, I proposed exploring tangible, quick-turnaround solutions to gauge their impact on acute care. After presenting this idea, I was pulled aside and told “It’s a great idea but won’t work. Those people aren’t smart enough to be trusted with our patients.” Do we assess patients' value based on age or their care setting? This incident showed me we still have a long ways to go in nursing. It shed light on a prevailing mindset for some nurses—a mindset entrenched in outdated paradigms, viewing the world through cracked lenses and taped bridges, desperately clinging to keep them together. It’s time for a new prescription. #nursesonlinkedin #nurseleadership #paradigmshift #nursestaffing #localgovernment #empoweringpeople #solutionfocused American Nurses Association American Organization for Nursing Leadership ANA-OHIO National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) Ohio Board of Nursing National League for Nursing American Academy of Nursing National Center for Assisted Living National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards

Very interesting paper 👁️🗨️ - especially for nursing home managers: the importance of the microsystem, in particular the pivotal role of so-called "care aides" for the quality of care in nursing homes: "The unique attributes of nursing home care, such as a team approach to care, relationship-based care, and care addressing both clinical and psychosocial needs of residents, necessitate a closer examination of context as perceived by care aides. This includes their team dynamics, day-to-day interactions with other staff, relationships with immediate supervisors, and the resources available for their daily practices.
