📣 Ohio Pharmacists 📣 The 2023 Ohio Pharmacy Workforce Report has been published and is available to download! This report, based on a survey sent to 5,000 Ohio-licensed pharmacists, sheds light on the evolving landscape of pharmacy practice and its impact on healthcare delivery across the state. Respondents answered questions addressing work setting and characteristics, job conditions and outcomes, and compensation and debt. I'd like to congratulate my co-authors, Yulia Murray, Tewodros "Teddy" Eguale and Jennifer Prisco on this publication, in the special issue "Advances in Experiential Learning in Pharmacy". Jennifer Prisco has been an exceptional leader and known expert in both experiential education and interprofessional programs. It is always an honor and privilege to work with her. Abstract In the United States, Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs are required to provide advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) in the core inpatient rotation areas of hospital/health system pharmacy and inpatient general medicine patient care. Colleges and Schools of Pharmacy (C/SOPs) nationwide are increasingly utilizing blended or longitudinal APPE models to offer experiential opportunities; however, there is a gap in the literature to support programs with delineating rotation-specific competencies when integrating two or more rotations together. Utilizing a survey instrument, PharmD students at two C/SOPs reported their onsite inpatient rotation sub-competency activities achieved within the four competency areas of Hospital/Health Pharmacy Systems, Medication Safety and Quality, Clinical Applications, and Professional Practice, which are listed in Appendix C of the 2016 Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Standards Guidance Document. Unpaired two-sample t-tests were performed to compare proportions of sub-competency activity occurrence in the two rotation settings. In total, 168 students reported inpatient activities related to the four competency areas, with 95–100% reporting their involvement in one or more sub-competency opportunities within each area. Of the 26 sub-competencies compared, 73% significantly facilitated the development of competency to a greater extent for one APPE inpatient rotation type over the other (p < 0.05). The findings can be utilized by C/SOPs to support the delineation of rotation-specific competencies when blending inpatient experiential opportunities. Traditionally seen as healthcare professionals confined to hospital settings or retail pharmacies, today's pharmacists are increasingly finding themselves at the intersection of healthcare and technology. This shift is creating a new breed of nontraditional pharmacists who are not only enhancing patient care but also driving innovations in digital health. Our founder, Ezinne Onwuekwe, exemplifies this shift through her career journey. From her beginnings as a logistics pharmacist in Nigeria to her current role as a Senior Clinical Informatics Analyst at Nova Scotia Health Authority, Canada, her path underscores the growing importance of digital skills in pharmacy. Her career trajectory, marked by roles in public health, project management, emergency preparedness, data analytics, and clinical informatics, highlights the diverse opportunities available to pharmacists willing to embrace change. Her experiences reveal that the journey of a nontraditional pharmacist is far from linear. It involves continuous pivoting and learning, driven by a desire to move beyond the conventional roles of counting pills or working exclusively in hospital settings. Instead, these pharmacists are applying their knowledge to solve complex healthcare challenges, often through the integration of data and technology. The digitalization of healthcare presents opportunities and the future of pharmacy lies in its ability to adapt and evolve with the digital age. In a recent interview, she talks about her pivoting from traditional pharmacy, the road bumps she faced ahead and how current undergraduate Pharmacists can go beyond the university curriculum to further prepare themselves for the ever-evolving and volatile digital shift happening in the healthcare industry.
