Observed annually in March since 1987, Women's History Month is dedicated to reflecting on the often overlooked contributions of women to United States history, culture, and society. One of the most significant ways your team can observe Women's History Month is to take a stance. Raise awareness for the contributions of women in the workplace and recognize the disparity that exists as women rise to break glass ceilings. A few ways your team can celebrate Women's History include: Learn about women who have made an impact in medicine, science, art, music, and more who were pioneers, paving a path for women to follow in careers they previously never dreamed possible. Explore the history of women's rights and discuss ways your team can make a group and individual effort to advocate for women in and out of the workplace. Support a non-profit that works to break down barriers for women, volunteer or donate to a charity that supports women, and support businesses owned and operated by women.

Did you know that women are set to inherit a staggering 70% of intergenerational wealth transfers? 💰 With a longer life expectancy and increased decision-making power, women are becoming significant players in philanthropy. In higher education, we need to recognize women's vital role in shaping the future of giving. 🤝 Their rising influence presents both opportunities and challenges for institutions. We need to be committed to engaging and empowering women in philanthropic endeavors. We must understand that their contributions can be substantial, often surpassing those of men in donor households. While many institutions recognize the importance of women's philanthropy, much work must be done to ensure that women are fully involved in our initiatives. We must actively seek their perspectives, listen to their voices, and tailor our approaches to resonate with their values and interests. As we navigate this exciting shift in philanthropy, let's seize the opportunity to cultivate meaningful connections with women donors. #InternationalWomensDay is around the corner – and it’s an important opportunity to reflect on our sector and women’s role within it. Did you know that… -      It is estimated that women make up 68% of the employees in our sector. -      Just 32 of the 100 biggest charities by income had a female CEO in 2023. -      This number has dropped by 6% since 2021. That last number paints a stark picture of disparity. We believe celebrating the contribution female leaders make to our sector and championing the next generation of female CEOs is vital. Last week, I hosted a conference for nonprofit consultants where 98% of attendees were women. In 2024, this group is expected to earn over $6.9M in revenue through our small businesses 👏. Thank money will pay for childcare, buy groceries and if you’re like me - will cover a few books when I’m too impatient to wait for the library. And yet, we live in a world where white women are paid $.80 to a man’s $1. Black women are paid $.69 and Latinas are paid only FIFTY-SEVEN F*CKING CENTS to a man’s $1. And don’t get me started on working moms who only make $.71. Another fun fact: only TWO percent of all fundraising dollars go to support organizations with programming for women and girls. 2! That’s why I’m deeply passionate about supporting nonprofits like Tender, Loving Black Single Mothers, Motherful and Chamber of Mothers These orgs and their leaders and still making a POWERFUL impact despite having to work twice as hard. This #internationalwomensday - I want YOU to remember - you hold power - especially when it comes to spending. ❓ are you buying from women-owned businesses ❓ are you giving to women-led nonprofits? ❓ are you asking women to speak at conferences and on podcasts? ❓ are you hiring female experts? ❓ are you stepping back/aside so that a woman can step forward? It matters.

Women of color are often drawn to social justice work out of a desire to help their underserved communities. However, the stresses of philanthropy—including rigorous event schedules, fundraising pressures, and dismissive attitudes from organization leadership—lead to large numbers of women of color experiencing burnout and exhaustion. Sayu Bhojwani describes this common experience in a recent article published by Chronicle of Philanthropy: “We often enter predominantly white organizations hoping, and invited, to be the voice of change. But when we speak out against tokenism or demand accountability on equity, the support and high hopes quickly evaporate.” Women of color also lead a significant number of philanthropic organizations, particularly small ones. The research lab Candid recently found that 28% of organizations with a budget of less than $50,000 are run by women of color. Sayu draws on her own experiences of running a nonprofit to describe the stress of constant advocacy and the pressures of relentless fundraising. Without adequate support, this stress can lead to lack of energy, a racing heart, and chronic illness. This #WomensHistoryMonth presents an opportunity for funders and nonprofits to take action to support women of color in leadership. Sayu argues that this needs to involve a reimagining of what leadership is and the structures around it. On a basic level, this means providing organizations with ample funding, as well as valuing the time and energy of women of color. For more meaningful, cultural changes, Sayu suggests strategies such as creating more peer retreats for women of color, investing in equitable co-leadership models, and for funders to engage with multiple staff members instead of just the executive director. #SheReadsSheLeads for #IWD2024 Author No 7. Cassie Footman "When women come together to support each other, incredible things happen” Featuring Cassie Footman, our seventh Author of many to respond to our Book Donor Call for #SheReadsSheLeads, an idea sparked during a Mentoring Session between Valerie Dwyer FRSA SUCCESS Coach, Mindset Mentor, Speaker, Author and Meg Zanker, joined by Sue Williams. Cassie is happy to support #SheReadsSheLeads, for International Women’s Day and beyond. Donating copies of her beautiful ‘The Daily Choices Journal: Create the future you desire’ Cassie told us that the most important thing for her is to gift some books to those who will benefit. She explained that this journal has been designed to help you make choices towards what you want and away from what you do not want. It will help you to raise your consciousness and direct your focus and awareness to a state where all things are possible. Supporting Women Entrepreneurs too Cassie also donated several copies of her ‘Better Business, Better Life, Better World’ book compiled by B1G1, the Global Business For Good Organisation. All books donated contain a personal and inspirational message from the Author to their reader. All books are lovingly hand wrapped and finished by members of @HucknallWI with decoration and a different inspirational message on the outer packaging. Messages to give renewed hope and empowerment to women in need right now... What is She Reads, She Leads? She Reads, She Leads’ aim is to celebrate, empower and inspire women in communities through the gift of a book donated by female authors and publishers, with a particular focus on personal development, non-fiction books. Partnering with the Hucknall branch of the Women's Institute, female authors and publishers are showing their support for women in March by donating copies of their books to be wrapped and distributed within Hucknall WI's community and (now) further afield . In particular we want to reach women in education, business or who may be facing difficult times.
