In 2023, The Fur-Bearers commissioned a national survey on Canadians’ attitudes towards various practices involving animals, including traps. The survey, conducted by Research Co., provides important insight into what the public believes when it comes to trapping. As wedding and graduation season approaches, we know that dove releases are planned for many events. Would we release a bunch of domestic cats far from home for entertainment and see if they make it home? We're unsure why it's ok to do that for pigeons and doves, when we wouldn't do it for any other domestic animal. The truth is - ceremonial dove releases are cruel. Happiness for these birds is having shelter, protection from predators, food, their flock. We take that away from them when they are released for show. Don't support dove/pigeon releases. Unfortunately, black dogs are often overlooked in shelters. There are currently several theories as to why black dogs seem to be adopted less than any other color: 1. Traditionally, black animals were seen as bad luck, or a sign that something terrible was going to happen. 2. Commonly, black dogs are portrayed in shows and movies as aggressive, further pushing this stereotype. 3. It is often harder to discern expressions on the face of a black dog, making it more difficult to see their “adopt me” expression. Did you know that we help horses in many ways? In addition to taking horses in from law enforcement cases and owners who can no longer keep them, we also feed horses whose owners are struggling with a temporary financial hardship. Sometimes an expected financial emergency hits you out of the blue - a family member is hospitalized or dies, you lose your job, or your car breaks down. You love your horses and you worry about how you might feed them for the next month or two until you get back to your feet. The idea of giving your horse up, your friend and companion, makes you cry. But you have to pay your mortgage and feed your kids. So what are you to do? Well, that's where our Horse Owners Assistance Program kicks in. We provide feed or hay in situations where folks have experienced a financial crisis that's short term and where a little feed would allow them to keep their horses. We don't need or want more horses, and we don't want folks to part with their best friends and companions. Providing this short-term help is a win-win.
