Thank you to Zeev Neuwirth, MD for writing this important book, “Beyond the Walls: Megatrends, Movements, and Market Disruptors Transforming American Healthcare”. My copy of the book is already dog-eared and its stories have given me an important boost of energy and inspiration as I work both on the front lines of #primarycare at Boston Medical Center (BMC) as well as locally and nationally on healthcare policy reform. Section 2 of this book- highlighting the humanistic healthcare movements- is my favorite. How can we truly heal individuals and communities if we are not focusing on and caring for the whole person? Two simple but revolutionary questions for patients that are embedded in VHA’s (Veterans Health Administration) Whole Health initiative: 1. What is most important to you, in your life, right now? 2. What is the thing that you would be willing and able to do today or tomorrow to move closer to that? Imagine if our entire healthcare system could align around asking - and pursuing- these core questions with patients. Zeev Neuwirth, MD book helps us all in remembering that these things are all possible, doable and up to us to make happen!

Thank you to Yalda Jabbarpour and co-authors for this seminal report released yesterday on the health of #primarycare in the US, entitled "No One Can See You Now". In it, they identify 5 critical reasons why Primary Care is so inaccessible in the US: 1) Primary core workforce is not growing fast enough; 2) Number of trainees who enter and stay is low; 3) the US continues to underinvest in PC; 4) Technology has become a burden for PC; and 5) Primary care research to identify, implement, and track novel care delivery and payment solutions is lacking. As someone who has practiced as a #familymedicine physician for > 18 years in a large #safetynet health system, I want to put this report in every legislator, health care leader, and payers hands and in the BRIGHT LIGHTS of Main Street so people can really understand what is happening on all levels.
