It’s great to see the Singapore team leading the way as we navigate the energy transition. It’s going to take a mix of technologies to achieve net zero and it’s clear that lower emission fuels will play an important role in decarbonising transport, especially the harder-to-abate sectors like heavy transport and aviation.   The great thing about renewable diesel like the one being trialed in Singapore is that it is suitable for use with existing diesel engines. We’d love to see Renewable Diesel flowing to Aotearoa New Zealand. Policy that encourages the supply of lower emission fuels can help.

Interesting to see Exxon marketing its #RenewableDiesel in Singapore as "R20" to reflect a 20% blend of HVO (see below). This nomenclature is already prevalent elsewhere in the road fuels sector. Gasoline in Europe — finished grade, as well as informally the blendstocks — is sold and traded as 'E5' and 'E10' to reflect the ethanol blends. It's also been floated recently for #SustainableAviationFuel, in various guises, after Virgin Atlantic got a slap on the wrist for its promotion of a flight using 100% SAF (links in the comments). Taking the lead from RD/EBOB and adopting this labelling (e.g. 'SAF100') wouldn’t solve aviation’s advertising problem. The Virgin flight "saved the lifecycle equivalent of 95 tonnes of CO2 or 64% of the emissions of a standard London Heathrow to New York JFK flight". Some have mused shouldn't it therefore have been 'SAF64', so the name reflects the emissions savings rather than the SAF blend. But it took Virgin almost six months to announce its findings into the lifecycle emissions savings for "Flight 100". While such analyses will be turned around more quickly in future, how viable is this marketing approach if the precise emissions impact is known only retrospectively? Added to feedstock profile, CO2 savings may not be uniformly realised across supply chains or flights. For example, certain flying conditions could affect the emissions savings, so that a 100% SAF blend may result in a 'better' performance on one flight versus another. Is an emissions savings-based approach conducive to standardising labelling? Or should aviation fuel marketers stick with the existing transportation standard, name according to SAF blend, and then it'd be up to airlines and the wider aviation community to carefully manage public expectations about the sustainability of flying on SAF via more nuanced marketing campaigns? Anyway, maybe this labelling chatter is all a distraction from the bigger story: 100% SAF produced via existing pathways (HEFA) DOES NOT realise full emissions reduction. Such an achievement won't probably come until so-called eFuels are made available at commercial scale. In the meantime, there will be those who say the #aviationindustry should top-up its sustainability efforts by offsetting the balance of emissions with carbon credits*. One final curveball... Since these efforts are about reducing/eliminating aviation's CO2 footprint, shouldn't this lead us to focus on measuring SAF not on a 'blend %' nor in the procurement/trading sphere on '$ per ton of fuel', but based on '$ per ton of CO2 abated'...? Until true carbon abatement data is available ahead of or in real time, there is no perfect solution. Any and all rebuttals/support/clarifications are welcome! The performance of BAR Technologies WindWings® has been validated by DNV. In an interim report, DNV found that when sailing in favorable conditions, the two WindWings® installed on the MV Pyxis Ocean, a Kamsarmax bulk carrier under the management of MC Shipping Singapore Branch and chartered by Cargill, reduced energy consumption of the main engine by 32% per nautical mile. The MV Pyxis Ocean is the world’s first ship to be equipped with BAR Technologies WindWings® technology. It embarked on open waters in August 2023. During testing, between August 2023 and March 2024, the vessel has traversed the Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, North and South Atlantic, and navigated Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. PT Pertamina (Persero) reaffirms its commitment to developing Pertamina Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a sustainable aviation fuel with a renewable energy content blend. Today, on Friday (27/10), Pertamina SAF is being launched through a collaborative mission between Pertamina and the commercial airline Garuda Indonesia. SAF development is one of Pertamina's efforts in the energy transition, especially in the aviation business, while supporting the Net Zero Emission (NZE) 2060 target achievement. Pertamina SAF is an environmentally friendly fuel that uses a mixture of palm oil components in the SAF formula to reduce aircraft emissions. Additionally, palm oil components utilization can stimulate domestic industrial and economic development.

Volotea signs 6.1m litres SAF offtake agreement with Repsol Spanish energy firm Repsol announced finalisation of an agreement with low-cost airline Volotea to supply 6.1m litres of sustainable aviation fuel between 2025 and 2029 ahead of the EU’s SAF mandate. The agreement will help Volotea meet the 2% SAF requirement set by the European Union's ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which will come into effect at the beginning of next year. “This alliance with Volotea reinforces our commitment to aviation in Spain.
