As we mark Disability Pride Month this July, it's essential to acknowledge that true diversity and inclusion should embrace all forms of human variation, including disability. Despite the increased focus on DEI initiatives, the disability community is often sidelined in these discussions. Surprisingly, only 3% of articles on diversity in 2019 and 2020 mentioned disabilities. Expanding our view of diversity to encompass disability is crucial. Companies excelling in disability employment and inclusion witness significant advantages: - 28% higher revenue - 200% higher net income - 30% higher economic profit margins - 200% increased likelihood of outperforming peers in total shareholder returns With over 750 million individuals globally, the disability community represents an immense untapped talent pool. As leaders, it's vital to understand that disability is not just a medical condition but a natural human diversity form that enriches organizations with unique perspectives and strengths. This Disability Pride Month, let's pledge to establish truly inclusive workplaces that value and empower individuals with disabilities. Remember, disability is a diversity group open to all at any time, making it everyone's responsibility to champion disability rights and inclusion. #DisabilityPrideMonth #Inclusion #Diversity

Fostering a workplace that embraces diversity and inclusion for employees with disabilities 👩🦽 is not only the right thing to do, but it also brings immense benefits to the organization. By prioritizing accessibility 🦻🏽 and providing equal opportunities, companies can tap into a wealth of talent and create a more innovative, productive, and engaged workforce. The Agenda 2030 explicitly states that disability should not serve as a justification or basis for exclusion from development initiatives. In July of 1990, George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”), a pivotal moment that has led to the recognition and celebration of the Disability Community. What began as an annual acknowledgment on/about July 26 each year has evolved into a month-long celebration known as Disability Pride Month. This month not only honors the ADA but also recognizes the achievements and positive contributions of individuals within the Disability Community, regardless of the nature of their disability. Recently, I had the honor of facilitating a conversation with John D. Kemp, President/CEO of the Lakeshore Foundation, alongside my colleagues at First Horizon Bank. Our discussion delved into various topics, including Mr. Kemp's role in the passage of the ADA, the advantages of disability inclusion in corporate environments, and the concept of Universal Design, which benefits everyone. For further insights into fostering inclusive environments, I recommend exploring Mr. Kemp’s book, "Disability Friendly: How to Move from Clueless to Inclusive." Let's continue to champion diversity and celebrate the valuable contributions of individuals within the Disability Community. #DisabilityPrideMonth #ADA #Inclusion #Diversity #UniversalDesign
