The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings measure global universities’ success in delivering on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2024, Massey University ranked 5th in the world in SDG11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. Academic research on different aspects of sustainable cities and the university’s commitment to sustainable commuting initiatives, including free buses to the Manawatū campus, a commitment to the ‘5 Green Star’ building standard or equivalent and recently completed work on the restoration of Massey’s historic Refectory building, have all contributed to SDG 11. https://lnkd.in/dqPm9Pq9

🔥 New paper out: Co-designing grounded visualisations of the Food-Water-Energy nexus to enable urban sustainability transformations Highlights: - A grounded Food-Water-Energy nexus connects to lived experiences. - A novel, user-centred and pedagogical co-design process for FWE nexus visualisations is presented and validated. - Evidence is presented from a study case in Poland of effective decision support about food provision in kindergartens. - The resulting “grounded visualisations” of FWE nexus enabled critical consciousness about the impact of everyday choices. - Grounded FWE visualisations support citizens and governments to seek pathways to sustainability transformations. How do you see the #skill of #systemthinking or making connections? The article captures the demonstration of skill perfectly. Systems thinking is a way of making sense of the complexity of the world by looking at it in terms of wholes and relationships rather than by splitting it down into its parts. Callum, a student at Ynysddu Primary School, Wales enthusiastically shared his school's air quality monitoring project, saying: "We do this by looking at the types of lichen growing on different surfaces. For example, areas with more nitrogen-loving lichen, like the kind we found near the rugby club car park, show poorer air quality from car fumes. That's why we're encouraging people to turn their engines off completely when parked – it can make a real difference!" The above is also a great example of how we can take action using biodiversity as an indicator of a health ecosystem. I feel so proud of the impact we are creating at Foundation for Environmental Education. In the last 30 years, Eco-Schools has become the world's largest environmental education programme. I am pleased to complete the course “Sustainable Regional Principles, Planning and Transportation” at Johns Hopkins University. The skills gained from the course include: 1. Regional Planning 2. Efficient Transportation Systems 3. Regional Park Planning 4. Zoning Strategies 5. Environmental Protection These skills cover important aspects of sustainable regional planning and development, and will enable me to contribute effectively to the development of balanced and environmentally, economically and socially sustainable regional communities.

The educational process at FEE is solution based. We see the impact through students who master complex #problemsolving skills like #systemthinking. We have been working with PPMi and this is another interesting development of education for sustainability. I know there are some out there- so please do contact Iselin. For example monitoring solar? Rewilding school grounds, creating collaborative learning spaces ( not rows in a classroom!), how you connect with the community, how you engage the students in food, procurement or other decision making and how this is made easy and visible in the layout of space. So how does the designed school environment enable ESD? Systems thinking, critical thinking, participation, interconnectedness, future’s thinking and understanding change and action learning? There was a great example of circular rooms at Nottingham University for collaborative participatory learning. So how is the school a learning lab for sustainability?
