A different perspective to explore! ( "Which I learned from Internal Family Systems family therapy" ) : What if instead of hating critical voices in your head or trying to push them away, you see them as a part of you criticizing you for a reason? Perhaps to protect you from something which has been there deep inside you . A deeper pain or a deeper wound. What if instead of judging or reacting to your critical thoughts, you get curious and try to understand where they are stemming from? Can curiosity lead to the greatest discoveries or healing? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this, please share below.

During a very important appointment, she told me she DIDN’T have all the answers about my son's condition and how to help him… And yet, that was one of the MOST professional interactions I’ve ever had with an SLP. Want to know why? During this meeting where we shared about my son's rare diagnosis, and his struggle with eating and swallowing… Our SLP responded with complete HONESTY. She explained that she didn’t know anyone else with his condition, and that there wasn’t much information about it available. THAT was her super power. She understood the limits of her knowledge.  She was confident enough in her strengths to not pretend like she had all the answers right away. She promised she would do everything she could to help us and would do more research to increase her awareness about his condition. Her honest and calm approach left me feeling confident that she was the right person to care for my son. She was self-aware.  Authentic.  Willing to learn. Moral of the story… sometimes it’s OK to not have all the answers!!! Understanding the extent of your knowledge and having the humility to admit when you need to do some more research for your patient's unique situation is a POWERFUL way to honor them. When someone believes they already possess all the answers, they often don’t ask questions or seek further clarity or understanding. As  nurse practitioners, many of us have an inherent appreciation for what we don’t know - maybe it was our schooling/education or the natural “hierarchy” of healthcare telling us where we belong. I know I’ve always had an inferiority complex which has allowed me to learn as much as I can, know what I don't know, and not be afraid to ask questions and seek help. I think this is one of the greatest superpowers for me being a nurse practitioner ✨ I’m reminded that thinking I know more than I do leads to complacency and a reluctance to continue learning. Sometimes time doesn't allow, or it's just not appropriate, but often during a consult I'll do a thorough oral assessment. We're looking at your baby's palate, tongue mobility, mouth opening, suck, assessing for asymmetries, oral ties and much more. Phew!
