Temperatures are 4.5˚C cooler in Medellin's green corridors. I'm a massive advocate for rewilding our cities (We even did a AV installation in 2020 based around it (link in comments)). Columbia's 2nd largest city, Medellin, has spend the last 8 years creating more than 30 green corridors and are reaping the benefits. Reduced temperatures and improved air quality are a direct result from planting almost 880,000 new trees, 2.5 million smaller plants and 5,000 square meters of vertical gardens installed on concrete walls. The corridors connect the cities parks and add 65 hectares of green space and have dropped the average temperature of the whole city by 2˚C. Over the next few decades officials expect the city to cool by 4-5˚C. The residents have become healthier due to the reduced levels of air pollution, respiratory infections have fallen significantly and the number of bicycle journeys have risen by 35%. Biodiversity is up and more 2.3 million tonnes of CO2 should be sequestered over the next 100 years. As cities account for more than 70% of global emissions, it's imperative that we use nature to help bring balance back to our cities and our planets. This is something we all can do. Among the concrete and steel, a few cities around the world have found innovative ways to incorporate greenery and all its benefits into their cityscapes. Exhibit A: Milan, Italy In Milan, humans and trees are practically roommates, sharing space in two vertical buildings named Bosco Verticale, which translates to Vertical Forest. The buildings house approximately 17,000 trees, shrubs, and plants between them. It’s an impressive statement on urban biodiversity, true green building, and the delicate balance between humans and nature.
