But we do wish to point out the fact that the critter in question is an incredibly efficient and very adaptable apex predator, that may weigh 175 lb., and may hunt for their supper amid urban spaces, farms, wilderness, and a whole lot of in-between space, among humans and their various critter charges. As we see it, ghosting American Big Cats is another way of dismissing the concerns of folks who are sharing the joys and burdens of living among these beautiful creatures. We are Cautiously Optimistic about seeing new Acknowledgement/Coexistence Horizons in 2024 for American Big Cats. But our Puma Puns etc. may get relentless, if the dis-info sources persist. Lies about Big Cats among humans are far from small lies.

“Bear” with us as we obsess over Ilona Maher’s stiff arm move! Talk about strength! The strongest animal in Oregon, in terms of raw physical strength and size, was at one time, the grizzly bear (*Ursus arctos horribilis*). They are considered extirpated in OR but were historically present and are recognized as one of the strongest animals in North America. Grizzly bears are powerful animals, capable of lifting and moving heavy objects, with some able to exert a force of up to 1,000 pounds. Words sometimes fail to express the depth of such situations, but my heart is breaking for those in Israel and Palestine. I heard a US influencer say yesterday, "in all honesty, it's not my problem. I care about what is happening in my own country". It took me a while, but I do understand this point of view. If we all took on everything that was on the news all the time, none of us would be left standing. And yet, this problem IS everyone's to be concerned about. We are ONE Earth, ONE humanity. We can't shut off and desensitize to numb ourselves to the pain. We're all connected, whether we like it or not. News has been getting closer to home recently, first with people I know in the Maui wildfires and now with Israelis I am acquainted with. When the terror is right on your doorstep, I imagine you would think differently and want the rest of the world to give a damn. Reading 'Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet' recently has given me hope and strength. Thich Nhat Hanh's own experiences with the Vietnam war were horrific, yet somehow he remained compassionate throughout and turned his anger into engaged action, taking neither side and remaining neutral, advocating for peace. May we all advocate for that peace that every human deserves, and which can seem so elusive at times. Returning to the breath to calm, taking a mindful walk when strong emotions arise before responding in a discussion... these are ways we can practice Zen in our own lives. Change begins within. We may not have all the answers to these complex issues, but I know something like this is a good place to start.
