Do Ivy Leagues champion elitism over education? I came across this NYT article that addresses the controversial subject of university rankings, how objective it is, and whether having a commercial element (selling marketing kits for schools to use on their web sites and social media) of this process undermines its objectiveness. This actually reminded me of a very interesting audio book that I heard for Malcolm Gladwell -one of my favorite authors - “I hate Ivy Leagues”, which really struck a cord with me. It exposes the bias embedded within the US higher education system, where selective admissions perpetuate the myth of exclusivity and hinder equitable access. A key point that he pointed out - contrary to what we believe, these prestigious institutions can easily expand their student capacity and promote fairness. They possess vast endowment funds that could be utilized for a more inclusive approach. The conversation needs to shift from rewarding privilege to prioritizing quality education for all. How do we empower the middle-class and make education affordable, fair, and open to everyone? Enrollment is a hot topic on every campus across the country, or at least it should be. However, many institutions keep their admissions criteria secret and require students to jump through unnecessary hurdles. When I launched RoseComm® in 2003, University of the Arts was one of our first clients (in partnership with Carton Donofrio Partners). We were involved in a fascinating brand development project and served as the interim public affairs lead during a brief transition. That's how I met my incredibly talented colleague Jennifer Leckstrom and one of our go-to designers Jessica Waters Frye. We haven't been involved with UArts since 2007 when we handled the transition from one president to another, hosting an event on the power of the creative class and unveiling a new center for creativity in the outgoing president's name. It's a special place oozing with talent. Many #schools are facing enrollment (and other financial) challenges. UArts is not alone. I suspect we'll see even more reorganizations, rebrands and closures. Having led #comms for a post-pandemic school closure, I can assure you there are ways to deliver the news that not only respect and reflect people's relationship to the institution but also protect the legacy for alumni and donors. It's easy for me to judge from the outside looking in, but reading about the closure in the daily newspaper or on #socialmedia is not how current students, incoming students, faculty and staff should find out. Take care of the people being directly impacted first before the news is made public. Prepare for leaks, yes, but don't allow "the way people found out" to lead the narrative. The news we have to deliver isn't always positive. I always thought that the various state Board of Regents / Coordinating Boards would help lead a common message campaign, at least within their state. This article is SPOT-ON!! Although I think that the line "it’s just as easy for a professor to teach an hour-long class to a thousand students as it is for her to teach a class of 10" eludes to a model of online education that would ultimately be ineffective, the general ideas presented in the article serve as a wake-up call to everyone associated with higher education. https://lnkd.in/g-i6W-Z6
