I have many role models in my life. One of them is my sister, Pam Winters. She has done so much to guide and direct me throughout my life. I usually don't even realize the strength of her effect upon my life; it's like the ocean pulling me. I may want to do one thing, but I know that I should be like and act like Pam, and so in many cases, I try to follow her. Some of her commitments have helped me are these: 1. Cardio--she ran three marathons, and I ran three marathons. 2. Weight lifting--she started lifting weights, and she persuaded me to lift weights. 3. Spiritual feasting--she has fervent prayer and scripture study, and I try to follow that. 4. Service orientation--she serves her six kids and many other people fully, and I try to similarly embrace that goal of total service. 5. Enthusiasm--she has a true zest for life, and I try to mimic her positive nature. When a path is laid in front of you, it's so much easier to follow that path than create your own path. Yesterday, my Grandpa Jim celebrated another year around the sun. In honor of his birthday, here are 4 essential life lessons I've learned from him: 1. Work hard. While his pace may have slowed a bit, he continues to farm in his 80s, and never stops moving. He has shown me that dedication and perseverance are key to achieving goals. 2. Believe that "it'll be alright." This is his famous quote, and it's a powerful reminder that no matter the challenges we face, things ultimately work out. He teaches me to approach life with optimism and trust that even difficult situations will find resolution. 3. Everyone has a story. Grandpa's gift for connecting with people is something I admire. He has a knack for finding common ground with anyone and building strong interpersonal relationships. He reminds me to be open to others' stories and experiences, as we can learn and grow from each other. 4. Have fun and live life to the fullest. His stories from his youth are filled with joy and adventure. He encourages me to embrace life's experiences, both big and small and reminds me that happiness is about making the most of every moment. #lifelessons #inspirational

A great quote for all aspects of one’s life.

One of many great conversations with Greg Horowitt today. Side note: been fun talking to him, especially since the first time I met him (1 year ago) I couldn't really hold my own and now I can. We discussed the idea of joy. "Joy," as he and many other intellectuals define it, is the extended state of satisfaction/success. It stands as a more realistic "meaning of life" than "happiness" which is fleeting in nature. Now to a certain degree, people can feel this "joy" through three things: - Pursuing purpose - Achieving a goal - Expressing themselves. For example, I'm a more purpose-driven person who wants to achieve the abstract goal of helping people live their greatest lives. This is my "why." However, I found it fascinating when Greg brought up a story where he and his close friend simply could not find common ground on numerous topics because of their differing pursuits of joy. Sure they understood each other (and that's what makes them great friends), but the perspective difference was huge between purpose vs. achievement. In any case, there are many different ways to compartmentalize people (ex. mbti, cliffton strengths) and I want to know more about the numerous human archetypes. #philosophy #life #knowledge #joy #idk

Nobody likes a mundane life, do they? But, life can really get in the way of how we're feeling AND how we express it. We all go through difficult and painful change at times and yes we are allowed to wallow in it for a while at least. On the other end of the scale, we also have to make the most of the great feelings we're experiencing. Yes, you can enjoy your wins in life, work, and relationships but it's really important to connect with them, express them and show them. Share them with people who care about you and your life. Being able to express our joys, excitement and wins is a great way to fix them into your memory bank so they will always be there to refer back to. These joys, wins and exciting times will also have an influence on our belief systems, confidence, self-esteem and self-worth systems. If we don't celebrate them we'll easily overlook them and disregard them as not important. So life is important. Making the most of life is important Celebrating our wins however small they might be are important. Who you are and what’s important to you MUST be honored. With so many people and things pulling on you each and every day, it’s extremely EASY to slip into the habit of dishonoring yourself by making less important what matters to you. That’s what you DON’T want to get in the habit of doing! In order to achieve balance in life, you cannot lose sight of who you are at the very core. You cannot allow the things that are important to other people to overshadow what is of importance to you, if you expect to enjoy the blessed life. Please understand that honoring personal identity and priority first does not make you a selfish person--it makes you a balanced person in a world where people honor you for what you do for them. If you make time each evening to write down the 3-5 things you want to accomplish the next day that are important to you, then you’ve taken the first step in honoring personal identity and priority first. Mind you, these are not tasks that OTHER people are expecting you to make happen for them. This “Daily 3-5 List,” as I call it, serves as a constant reminder that YOU matter.
