Investigators have implemented an automated health maintenance tool, created by the National Kidney Foundation, into electronic medical records, to hasten the screening of chronic kidney disease in adult patients with type 2 diabetes by primary care physicians. This innovative clinical decision support tool automatically offers a one-click option for ordering crucial kidney disease screening tests, such as the urine-albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) or plasmatic creatinine. The impact of this resource was evident in the University of Virginia Health System, demonstrating significantly higher rates of UACR testing during primary care encounters and surpassing groups not using similar automated tools. This achievement may represent a significant leap forward in proactive kidney disease diagnosis. A flare up or an exacerbation is described as a deterioration of three or more of the following symptoms within a 48 hour period: 🌟cough 🌟 sputum, volume and/or consistency 🌟sputum purulence 🌟 breathlessness, and/or exercise tolerance 🌟 fatigue, and/or malaise 🌟 haemoptysis AND a determination by a clinician that a change in treatment is necessary. This includes the need for medication and/or increased airway clearance. The above definition of an exacerbation was included at the November 8th patient education program at NYU Langone. This definition comes from a panel of American, European and Australian bronchiectasis experts who convened in 2017 to address how a bronchiectasis exacerbation is defined for research purposes. Although this is currently a working definition, it’s always best to speak to your doctor about how he or she defines an exacerbation and what you should do if you feel you are having one. Remember, early intervention is key to managing bronchiectasis flare ups and maintaining overall health. Rare Disease Day is a global initiative to raise awareness and generate support for everyone who is on a rare medical journey. It takes place on the last day of February, which this year is February 29th, the rarest day of the year. Currently appropriate therapy is available for 5 percent of patients with rare diseases, and the lack of effective treatments presents additional difficulties for those affected and their treating physicians. This highlights the need for medical and clinical research in this area, but there are serious challenges to overcome - starting with the lack of profitability, limited knowledge of the disease, to difficulty of patient enrolment to clinical trials. #rarediseaseday #clinicaltrials
