Last week, our Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer, Robert Karanja, PhD, had the opportunity to speak a the 10th Session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development. The theme of the event was the effective delivery of innovative science and technology solutions to reinforce the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063. Dr. Karanja spoke about the issue that the health and life sciences in Africa are a neglected market. Because Africa's purchasing power is perceived to be low, international pharmaceutical companies don't see it as a viable paying market. What that means is that we need to solve our own problems, which is why Villgro Africa exists: to invest in African healthcare solutions designed for the African context. You know how certain actors or actresses compel you to see a movie no matter what it is about? That is the case for me at conferences. Attended LSI recently and when I saw Kwame Ulmer was having a sit with Sewu-Steve T. the Managing Partner of Jaza Rift Ventures, dropped everything and made sure to attend. As usual, Kwame did not disappoint. Insightful question one after another. Answered with grace, humor and intellect it made for a compelling session. They were discussing the importance and also the difficulty in building up medical innovation in Africa. Sewu said something that was equally funny as it was sobering. Kwame asked what the largest issue Africa faced in healthcare and his answer was - Power. Kwame thought he may have meant political power. Sewu chuckled and said no, electricity. The way he responded was moving and entertaining at the same time. Made everyone in the audience stop and think what that must be like to not have the basic necessities. Cannot help but be in awe of Sewu taking on this Herculean task to bring advanced healthcare to patients for an entire continent. Extraordinary man. This is what Scott Pantel and his team bring every year. Thought provoking conversations and shining the light on areas where we can improve as an industry. #medtech #Africa

💰 Funding Opportunity: EUR 8-30 million per thematic priority! The #IKI Country Call Brazil is now open! Click here for details ➡️ IKI enhances bilateral cooperation with Brazil: https://lnkd.in/eWZeDrUD Quick Overview: Ø What are IKI Country Calls? IKI collaborates with partner governments to develop thematic priorities for bilateral projects, mainly with IKI priority countries. Projects go through two phases: outline and proposal. In the outline phase, organizations submit project outlines via an ideas competition. The IKI selects one outline per thematic priority. In the proposal phase, selected organizations submit detailed proposals. Ø Who can participate? Eligible organizations include NGOs, commercial enterprises, universities, research institutions (from Germany and abroad), implementing organizations in Germany, institutions in partner countries, and international intergovernmental organizations. Note: Governments in partner countries are not eligible for IKI funding.

I try to attend webinars to stay on top of current global trends as often as possible but to be honest, it is rare for me to stay focused until the end. Well, that did not happen tonight with a 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 interesting webinar led by Carsten Reichel on the antitrust enforcement landscape in Africa. 👌 The three guests panelists, Willard Mwemba, Mpumi Mazibuko and Kalidou Gadio did a great job highlighting how Africa's Regional Economic Communities work, with a focus on COMESA Competition Commission and explaining the new trajectory of regulatory enforcement, where sustainability and trade development meet, along with more cooperation between regulators and private companies. Thank you gentlemen! #AfricaCompetitionLaw #BusinessInAfrica #Comesa #AntitrustEnforcement #

More interesting insights into how and why evaluation is useful for member states, and why information exchanges (like WFP’s evaluation round tables) between policymakers, practitioners and researchers are so important.
Happy to share a new blog by Christoph Erichsen exploring how World Food Programme impact evaluation evidence helps ensure German development cooperation is effective and evidence-based, thanks to Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, and KfW support.

🌐 MGG/PRODIGEES Policy Labs for #SustainableDevelopment The Promoting Research on Digitalisation in Emerging Powers and Europe Towards Sustainable Development (#PRODIGEES) project, under the aegis of the #MGGNetwork, hosts the MGG-PRODIGEES Policy Labs from 29 April to 3 May 2024 in Stellenbosch, South Africa in collaboration with Stellenbosch University: https://lnkd.in/ete4DuZi. 💡 The policy labs serve as collaborative forums, in which an international group of participants engage in a dynamic working model that merges insights from PRODIGEES R&I endeavours since 2020. The objective is to formulate recommendations for policy-makers at the intersection of digitalisation and sustainable development in specialised focus areas across governance and society, and economy and environment. Beyond the formulation of policy advice, the meeting also serves the purpose to develop the future PRODIGEES agenda, network with local institutions, and explore digitalisation experiences in the South African context. Results will be presented and discussed in various ensuing formats, including an international conference of MGG/IDOS and the National School of Government (NSG) in Cape Town on May 4-9, 2024: https://lnkd.in/e8AKwUM8.
