The 2024 theme for Black History Month, "Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build," encapsulates a profound acknowledgment of the enduring contributions and achievements made by Black individuals in Canada throughout history. This theme not only commemorates the wealth of past and present accomplishments but also seeks to cultivate fresh opportunities for the future. It is imperative that we revisit and revise our history books to include the unvarnished truths of the past, equipping the younger generation with a comprehensive understanding of their heritage. Rather than simply altering names, we should strive to educate individuals about the significance of those names and invest resources into education, housing, and community development. It’s February, which means it’s Black History Month! 🖤📆 Canada's Black History Month theme for 2024, "Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build," not only underscores the remarkable contributions of Black Canadians in the past and present but also urges us to look towards a future that embraces diversity and new opportunities. For us, “Black Excellence” is not just a phrase; it’s a powerful acknowledgement of the achievements and resilience of Black individuals in the face of adversity. At the Centre, we believe it is crucial to recognize that the contributions of the Black community are woven into the very fabric of our society – and the celebration and recognition of those contributions should not be confined to a single month of the year. Supporting and celebrating Black communities, organizations, initiatives, and individuals is a commitment we keep year-round. We also believe that this important and symbolic support needs to be translated into action. In the coming weeks, we'll be publishing initiatives by and for Black people in which we've participated. Join us in making Black excellence an integral part of our year-round agenda. February is Black History Month, and at CCFWE we are excited to honor Black excellence and celebrate the voices that make our organization stronger under the theme, "Empowering Black Excellence: Amplifying Voices, Celebrating Trailblazers, and Nurturing Identity." Black History Month provides us with an opportunity to honor and celebrate the rich diversity, history, and culture of Black people in Canada. It's a time to recognize and appreciate the countless contributions made by Black communities across the country. At CCFWE, we take pride in being a Black-led organization with a range of programs dedicated to Black and racialized women, including refugees, immigrants, and newcomers who are at high risk of domestic Economic Abuse. Black individuals have played a crucial role in shaping our organization and contributing to our overarching goal of addressing Economic Abuse and economic injustice. This Black History Month will highlight the exceptional contributions of Black individuals who have shaped our mission of combating Economic Abuse and empowering survivors. As a Black woman in the diversity, equity, and inclusion space, crafting this post has been an emotional journey of introspection. It's a time when we celebrate the resilience and achievements of Black Americans, while also confronting the harsh realities of our current state. In 2024, we continue to witness "the first Black" moments, a testament to progress yet a reminder of persistent barriers. It's a bittersweet realization. While February serves as a platform to amplify Black voices and contributions, it also highlights the ongoing struggle for true recognition and equality. We cherish the strides made, yet we are disheartened by the lingering disparities. The acknowledgment of our accomplishments is sometimes overshadowed, minimized, or misunderstood. But amidst this conundrum, I remain hopeful. Hopeful for a future where Black excellence is celebrated without reservation, where achievements are not anomalies but expectations. 🌟Celebrating Black History Month in the UK 🌟 As we commemorate Black History Month in the UK, it's essential to honor the rich and diverse contributions of the Black community to our society. This month serves as a reminder to recognise and celebrate the achievements, resilience, and cultural heritage of Black individuals throughout history and in the present day. One of the pioneers in the UK is Mary Pierre-Harvey. She decided to become a chartered quantity surveyor entering a white-male-dominated construction and property industry. In 2019 she became the UK’s first Black female director of estates at a large UK university. Mary once said: “I have walked through the valleys of the shadows of racism, sexism, bullying and unequal pay, which I have experienced directly from white and male managers and which were meant to break and destroy me completely. They have only served to make me stronger, wiser, more empathetic and stand taller. Different doesn’t scare me.” Let's take this month as an opportunity to amplify Black voices, support Black-owned businesses, and educate ourselves on the history and experiences of Black people in the UK and beyond. Did you know that there are more than 1.5 million Black Canadians who represent over 300 different ethnic or cultural origins? February is Black History Month, and this year’s theme is "Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build." Since the early 1600’s, Black people have been on the land now known as Canada; yet Black History Month was not established until 2008.  Black History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the diverse cultures, rich heritage, and countless contributions of Black Canadians, and to learn about their legacies and histories.
