Did you know that a lot of businesses advertise jobs on LinkedIn by just posting about the role, rather than paying to advertise? You can find these by simply typing - "Hiring" AND "Job Title" - into the search bar. For example - "Hiring" AND "Sales Manager" will bring up any posts that are promoting a Sales Manager vacancy, providing you with greater sight of possible job opportunities. The key thing is to ensure you write it as above, include AND written in capital letters. Give it a go and let me know what you think.

Looking for work? Try cold-emailing and contact potential employers and hiring managers. We’re not kidding. Doing this correctly means you can connect with potential decision-makers, even if they haven’t posted a job opportunity. Here’s how to do this: • Research the companies in which you’re interested and people you know can help you. Identify the people in the departments in which you’d like to work who make hiring decisions. • Try to find the person’s email on the company’s website. If you can’t find an email, use LinkedIn’s messaging system. (You may need to ask for a “connection” on LinkedIn first.) • Make your subject line memorable: mention people you both know and/or the skills you have that would be of value to that person. Examples: “Marketing Coordinator – Jeane Doe.” • Personalize the opening. Introduce yourself and then mention what you bring to the table: “My name is Jeane Doe. I have 10 years of experience as a marketing coordinator in the automotive industry. I see that XYZ Automotive plans to expand into Smith County, and I know that my marketing skills will help attract customers in your new location.” • Then get right to the point and state why you're contacting the person: either you are looking for an informational interview or a job opportunity. • Include a link to your LinkedIn profile in the email. • Provide your email address and phone number. • If you don’t hear back from the person in a week, email again. W recently embarked on a hiring journey for email marketing specialists, posting job openings on LinkedIn and other job platforms. To our surprise, we received an overwhelming response of 91 applications. However, only 3 candidates made it to the level 2 interview stage. This experience highlights a crucial aspect of the online job market - there is no shortage of opportunities, but rather a gap in skills that separates successful candidates from the rest. Linked in tip: Many companies are using the job board as a marketing tool to drive traffic to their website so ensure all job postings are verified before applying to them (yes you can do that). Also, there are many companies that don’t want to pay to put their jobs up so they have people in the company post a post that say they are hiring. So use the search bar and type “I’m hiring” AND (in all caps) the job title you are looking for.

A recent negative experience at a well-known international restaurant had me reflecting on customer service. This in turn had me pondering on the unique relationship that hiring teams and job seekers have during the hiring/job search process. Wise hiring teams utilize a hiring marketing strategy that will put the company in a good position to attract potential candidates who have much needed skills and talent. Once their marketing documents – job descriptions – are completed, they make them available through job boards and social media platforms. Job seekers are the customers who view the hiring teams' marketing documents wherever they happen to encounter them. Wise job seekers will review the marketing documents, research companies, and decide whether to move on or move forward in the process. When wise job seekers move forward with the job application processes, they know they need to prepare job search marketing documents – resumes and cover letters - that align with the requirements of companies. They do this because the roles are now reversed. Job seekers become marketers and the companies become customers. What makes things even more interesting is that if either side has a negative experience they can go with a competitor – another candidate or another company. Job search tip! For all those applying and not getting anywhere, if you are the right fit, you have to go the extra step beyond just hitting apply to get noticed. Why do I say this? We posted a sales job the other day. In 2 days over 800 people applied. When we filtered down to who had actual sales experience, it left 20 people. When we filtered further to those who also had the required ad/marketing/production agency experience, it left 1 person. What does this mean? Applicant numbers don't mean anything. If you are the right person, you are often clouded by an array of resumes of people who aren't the right fit. If you have the required experience (and that part is key!), you need to go a step further. Reach out to the hiring manager directly with a simple and straightforward message. Highlight 3 key things that make you the perfect fit, include your resume and the times you are available to speak. Or if you have anyone who can make an intro for you at that company, use your network to help you open doors! Networking is an amazing way to get in front of people! Marketers, please add performance metrics to your CV, and elaborate at interview!!! It would be strange for a sales person to not divulge how many deals they closed. Imagine a recruiter who could not tell you the amount of placements they had made? What about a product manager who could not tell you how successful a launch was? How about an NHS consultant who could not tell you how they had brought down A+E waiting times.... Actually ignore that one. A CEO doesn't really care how many different channels you have been responsible for, if you can't tell them exactly how that has impacted a business! If you are a junior Digital Marketing Assistant, maybe you increased conversions by 14% on a campaign by being innovative? If you're a seasoned Marketing Director, how have you performed vs budget for instance? When setting out the duties you have performed for each business you've worked for, I'd have a "Duties" section, followed by an "Achievement" or "Impact" section armed to the teeth with metrics. In interview I'd employ the STAR method as a way of demonstrating what you did, how you did it, and the IMPACT. Have a great week of job hunting!
