Tourism in Rome
Rome is the capital of Italy, boasting many sites from ancient times that can tell us stories about the Ancient Roman Empire, amazing food, and an intriguing culture.
When coming to Italy and Rome specifically a big selling point is the food. Italian cuisine is known for having a very carbohydrate based diet but surprisingly is also easily sustainable without health issues. The reason for this is that when comparing European flour to American flour we can find some major differences. The first is that American wheat is sprayed by glyphosate which is common on many GMO’s and can lead to indigestion or other issues. In Europe the practice of spraying glyphosate on crops to prevent pests is banned. The second reason is that the flour in Europe has less protein in it which means there is less gluten and it will be easier on your stomach in the digestion process. A healthier flour combined with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables grown in Italy’s rich soil creates many dishes that just can’t be replicated anywhere else. Personally I think that the main reason a lot of people choose to come to Rome is to have good food combined with seeing plenty of historical sites.
Rome is by far the most traveled city in Italy and in 2019 Rome was the 17th most traveled city in the world. Rome is going to see most of its tourism from Europe with the most being Germany, then France, then the UK. They also have many visitors from the U.S. and China.
After arriving in Rome nearly a week ago now and having toured many other cities in Italy prior, Rome has many differences. One thing that seems to be unique to Rome cuisine is meat skewers and side dish potatoes. Rome also seems more interconnected than the other cities in terms of walkability to all necessary means of living.
Next week I’ll be diving into a beautiful city just outside of Rome called Tivoli. This summer I will be serving as a consultant for Terre di Otium, which is the Destination Management Organization (DMO) for the Aniene Valley. I hope to help show others about Tivoli and all the interesting places within it.
