Actions against GBV should be community-led, and Ushananthini Sureshkumar shows it through her advocacy and actions in the Kilinochchi district of the Northern Province.   As a champion for justice and change, she has been actively involved in transforming communities, advocating to address GBV, and working towards preventing GBV, especially related to women and girls. Her biggest win has been in educating parents with children of young age (below 18) not to propose marriage as a solution for financial issues. Instead, she collaboratively explores alternative solutions with parents to avoid the detrimental impact of such practices on the lives of their children.   Her actions reinforce the importance of active involvement and advocacy, in addressing the critical issues of our society. When those with privilege actively engage in advocacy, they amplify marginalised voices, challenge systemic injustices, and contribute to a more inclusive society. Using privilege for advocacy involves recognising one's advantageous position and leveraging it to address disparities. By lending their voices to issues affecting marginalised groups, privileged individuals can bring attention to injustices that may otherwise go unnoticed. This advocacy extends beyond raising awareness; it involves actively challenging discriminatory practices and advocating for policy changes to dismantle systemic barriers. Privileged individuals can use their access to resources, networks, and platforms to uplift marginalised voices. This collaboration fosters a more inclusive dialogue and amplifies the impact of advocacy efforts. It is not merely about feeling guilty for one's privilege but understanding the responsibility that comes with it – a responsibility to contribute to dismantling oppressive structures. Privilege, when wielded responsibly, becomes a powerful tool for advocating for those on the margins of society. #TuesdayTip for white people involved in racial justice, hearing people working in Deaf communities, straight people in LGBQ advocacy, and so on... One characteristic of allyship is redirecting resources (in the forms of money, access, jobs, reputation, platforms, etc). So if you aren't being awarded *by* the community you're being recognized for serving, step aside. There are plenty of people *from* that community doing that work, but who don't get as much public recognition in part because society values saviorship.
