Proud to share out Seattle Department of Transportation's 2022 Commute Trip Reduction Performance Report - shout out to our TDM intern, Oskar Abian for bringing a sharp eye to this work. Our 2022 Performance Report combines data collected over 2021 and 2022 including staff commute surveys and employer transportation benefit program reports to analyze program effectiveness & impacts on climate, equity, reducing drive alone rates and more. CTR affects over 250 of Seattle's large employers representing more than 225,000 employees. Read the 2022 CTR Performance Report here: https://lnkd.in/g682dd3t Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) is a 1991 Washington State law to reduce drive alone commutes at major employers in the most congested parts of the state. While the 1991 goals of reducing congestion, conserving resources, and reducing pollution still stand, we know CTR is also a critical tool in the fight against climate change. "It’s important for public agencies, companies, community colleges, and workforce development stakeholders to come together to envision skills training and registered apprenticeship policies that will not only maximize infrastructure investments and expand benefits, but also create new pathways to good jobs for underrepresented groups including, black and brown workers, women, young people, veterans and re-entry citizens" - Victoria Johnson National Skills Coalition and Business Leaders United convened with more than 60 stakeholders who play a key role in advancing state and federal clean energy skills training policy. Aligned to our People Powered Infrastructure campaign, NSC and BLU plans to use the momentum from this event to build support for federal and state investments in pre-apprenticeships and industry sector partnerships. As deadly and destructive storms like Hurricane Helene demonstrate time and again, it’s more critical than ever for the insurance industry to do more about the underlying causes of climate change. One of our highlights during #ClimateWeekNYC was an important discussion we held with about 60 insurance companies, brokers and other climate experts on the opportunities and innovations available to insurers to take on the climate challenge — from helping to reduce the risk of deploying clean energy innovations, to engaging with their clients to support clean energy transitions, to rebuilding with a climate lens. As EDF's Lea Borkenhagen, PhD put it, “The insurance sector needs to act because the insurance business model depends on the longevity of all the businesses they insure. And we want them to act because insurers have the ability – through their policies, pricing, and risk assessments – to mobilize their clients to act on climate change.” The discussions we had with insurers this week will inform our emerging work on insurance. Nearly twenty years ago I had the opportunity to be a summer intern for the Environmental Defense Fund, and today, I represented Chubb as part of an EDF and Salta Institute-hosted panel on insurance and decarbonization for #ClimateWeekNYC. It was truly a full-circle moment. Many thanks to the EDF team for the opportunity to be part of such a thought-provoking discussion and to collaborate on finding ways forward that work for business and the environment. It’s always great to have a chance to present with Carolyn Kousky, Leslie Labruto, and Peter Tufano and spend time with the amazing Lea Borkenhagen, PhD.

Recently, Paul Fain highlighted the need of youth apprenticeship programs in our workforce in his newsletter “The Job.” He instantly noted that employers need to take a more active role in the U.S. education system to establish career pathways for a broader range of Americans, especially those without four-year degrees. Despite bipartisan support and the pressing demands of the labor market, progress in this area has been slow at best. Noting two The Brookings Institution reports, he commented that the best approach to solving this need is through regional, multi-sector coalitions, a goal CareerWise and our partners have been working toward for years. He quotes Annelies Goger, a Brookings Metro fellow and co-author of the report: “The changes that we propose involve a transformative shift in how employers in the U.S. have seen themselves, from being a consumer of talent to being a co-producer of talent… Eventually, more employers will come to the conclusion that they have to play a more active role in creating the prepared workforce they need.” You can read the entire newsletter where he explores “A Unified Voice on Workforce Needs” here: https://lnkd.in/g_wEEgqn?
