Considering applying for internships over the winter break? ✍️ Take advice from ACE senior Margaret Vaessen, who had an internship at Farm Credit this past semester. Through Margaret's hands-on projects and the opportunities to see firsthand the farms that Farm Credit Illinois supports, she was able to solidify her goals to work in agricultural finance📈 📉 She encourages students to take advantage of internship opportunities to find what they like and don't like because they are equally important. "Hard work lies in passion for what you are doing, so find what you are passionate about and make it work," she says. Looking for internships to apply to? Check out Handshake @ Illinois🤝 and keep up with the ACES Career Connection newsletters!

I always ponder upon a question that- Why does an internship matter so much? Is it just a stepping stone, or is it where the real journey begins? And now I think, I got my answer. As my internship at Modesto Crop Protection Ltd. comes closer to its end, it has been an eye-opening experience. It's not just about the hands-on work in marketing and finance; it's about the late nights, the problem-solving, and the excitement of being part of something bigger. Each project I take on and each skill I hone feels like a small victory, as this experience is not just about building a career; it's about embracing every moment and learning something new every day. To everyone out there, please just remember that it’s not just a temporary phase—it's a foundation for the future we are building. It is these experiences that shape us and pave the way for what's to come. PS: I will soon share the detailed report of my internship projects.

Entering into the third week of my new internship, I have begun to put my accounting skills into use! Jaycie at Southwest Management has been such a great advisor walking me step by step through payrolls, e-filing, entering in transactions/deposits and reconciling bank statements. It has been great pushing and testing my knowledge while also learning a whole bunch of new techniques and strategies. Had a blast at the North Dakota Farm Bureau NDSU collegiate chapter’s mentorship panel tonight! Some highlights: 1. There are always hard things in whatever job you choose, but find something you are passionate about to overcome the hard things. 2. There is a lot of opportunity in #agriculture right now. Door is wide open. 3. The career path for you might meander or could be a straight shot. Everyone will have a different path. 4. If you are getting an internship, ask the company what their internship program looks like. If they can’t answer, more often than not you’ll be pushing paper and not learning something. 5. No matter what, take advantage of getting better no matter where you work. 6. Be curious, but self sufficient. Ask questions after trying to explore and solve it on your own, but always be curious about learning more. 7. Find a good mentor. #internships #careeradvice #students

Internship Spotlight Shout out to Behrend Senior Kayla Oosterkamp! Kayla plans to graduate this semester (Spring 2024) with a bachelor's degree in Accounting. Since May 2022, Kayla has interned at McGill, Power, Bell and Associates in their tax department and has really enjoyed her experience. She finds MPB to be a great company to work for, everyone is welcoming and accepting. Even during busy season, everyone is always willing to help. Kayla is happy to share that she has accepted a full time offer upon graduation, continuing her work with the tax department! *** What Advice would you give students considering an internship? *** I would suggest that students start going to the Career Fair as early as their first year at Behrend, even if they aren’t necessarily ready for an internship. It allows them to network with all the companies. Once they are ready for an internship, the company will likely remember talking to the student in the past. *** Do you feel that Behrend has prepared you for your internship? *** Yes, throughout all the coursework at Behrend I have learned valuable information I have seen throughout my internship. *** Final Thoughts? *** I would recommend students to get involved on campus. The more they are known around the campus by their professors and peers, the more likely they will be mentioned if an employer is seeking someone for an internship. If you know Kayla, give her a shout out and say ‘hello’. Our students are going places! WE ARE
