In the first of five reports published as part of our Charter School Equity, Growth, Quality, and Sustainability Study, we examine how state actors can strengthen charter schools’ commitment to educating students with disabilities. To date, state actions have been relatively limited and largely compliance-focused. The lack of state action likely results from a mix of the complexity behind school accountability systems and the political challenges that emerge when state actors engage in charter school policy making. Resilience in the Shadows: Empowering Unaccompanied Minors Through Education In our communities, unaccompanied minors from other countries are navigating life with incredible bravery and resilience. Without the support of family systems, these young people are balancing full-time work and the challenges of a new country—all while striving for a better future through education. These kids are not just surviving; they’re showing us what it means to be truly resilient and determined. But they need our support. Traditional school schedules and programs don’t fit with their demanding lives. To truly support them, we must create schools with flexible schedules and tailored instruction that recognize their unique circumstances. It’s time we honor their hard work and courage by building educational systems that meet their needs. When we support these young people, we’re not just helping them—we’re strengthening our entire community. Let’s take action to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn and succeed, no matter the obstacles they face.

Birmingham is getting creative to ensure kids are in school every day, and it’s working! ⬇️ In January, we launched Every Day Counts, a partnered effort with City of Birmingham Mayor's Office and Birmingham City Schools (BCS) to combat truancy. The effort offers an incentive to Birmingham’s public housing families wherein, if all school-aged children in the household are in the classroom each day for one calendar month, the household is entered into a random drawing for financial assistance toward a housing (ex. rent) or utility (ex. electricity) expense for the following month. In January, we had fewer than 10 households eligible. Yesterday, we had +130 and awarded $2,700 to nine households whose school-aged children received perfect attendance. In addition to the financial incentive, we’re offering wraparound services to support academic performance like Homework Help, literacy programming, and transportation to and from school if needed. In February, we had 60+ youth residents receive Homework Help after school and 40+ adult residents participate in literacy programming. Our success over the next few months until the end of the school year will be measurable thanks to a new data-sharing agreement in place between HABD and BCS. The early success of Every Day Counts is a result of our staff and community partners who share a commitment to helping public housing residents — many of whom are our most vulnerable —overcome barriers and become self-sufficient. #Birmingham #Community #Partnerships #Impact #Education #Studentdevelopment #Successstory

Preschool teachers are more likely to look for signs of challenging behavior in young Black children—especially young Black boys than young white boys (Gilliam et al., 2016). This sobering statistic underscores the critical work we do at the Midwest & Plains Equity Assistance Center (MAP). Our mission of “Equitable, Responsive Education for All” propels us to address these disparities head-on. We guide our partners through the development of critical consciousness which empowers educators to examine their own implicit biases. In recent years, special education policies regarding the maximum age for eligibility have evolved rapidly, creating both opportunities and challenges for families and school districts. These changes can provide crucial support for students with disabilities, offering extended time to acquire life skills or bridging gaps between school and adult services. As policies shift, it’s essential for districts to help families stay informed and navigate these adjustments effectively. You Can’t Spoil a Child by Attending to Their Needs The idea that attending to basic needs will spoil a child is one of the elements of misinformation that Reach Out's family programs hope to debunk. Attending to emotional and physical needs of our children, especially between birth and five years: ▶️ Teaches them to recognize their own needs and boundaries ▶️ Develops self-confidence as they learn to self-soothe ▶️ Drives understanding of how to be in the world with reassurance that a family member is there to guide them We see this work as fundamental. Building strong, self-realized children will in turn create a capable and confident community for the Inland Empire. Family literacy and numeracy practices are paramount when predicting a child's success in school. Caretakers in the home have the ability to model life-changing literacy and numeracy practices in their day-to-day interactions with the children they care for. Estimating how many jumps it will take to get to the end of the driveway or reading street signs out loud with your child can help them develop applied literacy and numeracy practices in their everyday lives. Every parent and every caretaker has the ability to create patterns of resilience, persistence and problem-solving skills when they read with and engage in math skills with their child.
