We are proud that another valued DEMIRS team member will participate in the 2024–25 Public Sector Commission's Women in Executive Leadership Initiative. Brooke Eddington has been appointed as Director of Project Coordination and Reporting for Energy Policy WA as part of this initiative, which aims to support talented women in building the necessary skills to take on senior positions in the public sector. It’s one of many initiatives we are involved in to help foster a diverse and inclusive department that reflects our WA community. Not only does Brooke bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to this position, but she is also passionate about playing a vital role in WA’s energy transition. Congratulations, Brooke! We can’t wait to see what you achieve.

Reflecting on my Leadership and Youth Engagement. Currently, I find myself at a pivotal moment where my leadership is being tested. I’m faced with tough, uncomfortable decisions that could have significant implications for many individuals, and I often worry about being perceived as the one who stands in the way of opportunities that could change lives. Navigating who truly deserves these opportunities and who should be in the room is a challenging aspect of leadership. It forces me to confront difficult questions while also striving to build a supportive environment for young leaders. I sometimes feel like I'm walking a tightrope, balancing the expectations of my team and the necessity of making hard calls. As a young leader, I want to ensure that my hard work—and that of my peers—is recognized and rewarded. However, it’s disheartening to see some individuals become complacent, assuming they will be granted opportunities without demonstrating the effort required. I find myself in a position where I must enforce standards, and as a result, I occasionally come off as the "bad guy." I know that some may view my decisions as holding back opportunities, but I am committed to fostering a culture of merit and dedication. I acknowledge that this journey isn’t easy and can often feel complicated. Ultimately, my goal is to make choices that I can be proud of—decisions that will leave a meaningful legacy. I don’t seek validation from others; instead, I aim to uphold my own standards and values. As we approach COP16, I reflect on how crucial it is for us to elevate the voices of young leaders and create a platform for genuine engagement. I invite everyone to join us for the 4th #YouthForum happening in less than 38days from now, December 5th to 7th https://lnkd.in/eR724H4d This event embodies our commitment to fostering meaningful discussions and empowering youth to take an active role in shaping our collective future. And if you are genuinely interested in volunteering and contributing to building the youth movement within the UNCCD—without the expectation of being supervised or assigned tasks—please reach out. Together, we can achieve so much as a collective force. Let’s connect and work towards a brighter future for our communities and the planet. Thank you, and I look forward to speaking with you all soon! #Youth4Land

My latest column in The West Australian on diversity within Australian boards. To add to my thoughts below, I would argue there needs to be more transparency and visibility of what being appointed to, and being on a board really means. It’s been an aspiration of mine for a long time, primarily because some mentors and role models of mine had shone a light on what was behind the curtain, and had encouraged me to pursue it in my career journey. I would argue, however, that there are a lot of people out there (and women especially - even more so if they don’t have an accounting or law degree) that wouldn’t have even considered it as an option. Yet they should be - great leadership and governance on boards really does make a huge difference to organisations, and even our society and culture. #boardleadership #boardculture #organisationalculture #womenonboards #boarddiversity

I like this news very much. And can say that my small experience of jointly leading an organisation with the powerhouse that is Victoria Barlow has been overwhelmingly positive - both for the business and me as an individual (can't speak for Vic but hope she feels the same 😬). When I first started toying with the idea of finding a business partner, a few people questioned the logic - isn't it better for you to remain the boss and to grow the team beneath you? Why would you want to share what you've worked so hard to build? One person said my ego would regret it. 🤯 They were all wrong. Sharing power and decision-making. Sharing risk and reward. Sharing rants and laughs. Co-leading Agenda hasn't reduced my portion of the pie, it has enhanced it. So I'll be cheerleading ActionAid and its co-chief executives from the sidelines and looking forward to seeing the positive impact of this decision. And if anyone else is thinking about introducing co-leadership roles to their organisation and would like to talk through the pros and cons, I'd be happy to share my experiences, if helpful.
ActionAid UK has announced three interim co-chief executives as part of a “feminist leadership structure” which aims to share power and decision-making. The three interim co-CEOs are director of innovation and impact Taahra Ghazi, director of people and culture Shade Odupelu, and director of advocacy and influencing Hannah Bond, all of whom will continue their current roles as well.

After extensive research and collaboration, Equal Measures 2030 has launched the "Closing Gaps, Opening Doors: Promoting Inclusive Data Collection for Girls’ and Young Women’s Leadership and Participation" study today in Geneva. This research, supported by The Social Investment Consultancy (TSIC) sheds light on the gaps in data surrounding girls’ and young women’s (GYW) leadership. It identifies the barriers in resource, institutional, policy, societal, and cultural that hinder data collection and #GYW participation in leadership roles.
