Happy World Food Safety Day! Let's mark today by mastering these simple food safety habits at home! Food safety isn't just a concern for food manufacturers; it's crucial for our well-being as consumers too. This year's theme aims to raise awareness about potential unexpected food safety challenges, like dealing with "NEPA" taking the light. Here’s how we can practice food safety in a typical Nigerian home: 1. When you buy perishables like dairy, fish, or meat without a cooler bag, get home quickly and refrigerate or freeze them to prevent contamination. 2. Keep perishables like fruits and vegetables in the fridge or use coolers with ice packs during power outages. 3. Owning a backup generator is essential if you have a fridge or freezer. Make sure your fuel keg is always stocked for emergencies to avoid food spoilage. 4. Always wash your hands and clean kitchen surfaces before handling food, to avoid transferring microorganisms from one substance to another. 5. Use different knives, spoons and chopping boards for raw and cooked foods to prevent cross-contamination. 6. Store raw and cooked foods separately in the fridge, with raw food placed below cooked food to prevent juices from dripping onto the cooked items. If you have any additional tips, feel free to add them! #worldfoodsafetyday #foodsafety #healthyliving #nigerianhousehold #safefood #worldfoodsafetyday2024 #preparefortheunexpected

💭Frozen Food at -15°C instead of -18°C? ✅ Some claim freezing, Holding & Transporting Frozen food at -15°C instead of -18°C has no effect on the Quality of the food. If it true, imagine the amount of savings it would have. Let’s look at the benefits and savings it would have. ✅ Potential energy savings: • A 2023 study by the International Institute of Refrigeration found that raising the standard freezing temperature for food by just 3°C, could cut global energy consumption by 17.7 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. This is equivalent to taking 3.8 million cars off the road. • The study also estimated that this change could lead to energy savings of around 25 terawatt-hours (TW/h) per year, which is roughly equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of Delhi, India. ✅ Environmental Friendliness : • Most of the gases used in refrigeration has higher GWP. Reducing it by 3°C, will leave the earth greener and has sustainability advantages. ✅Cost Saving : • Lowered cost of Managing Refrigeration - means the Food would become more affordable. • There would be significant cost reduction in the Managing Capex and Opex of Refrigeration ✅ Impact on food safety and quality: • While lowering the freezing temperature does save energy, it's crucial to ensure it doesn't compromise food safety and quality. The current -18°C standard was established to guarantee food safety by minimizing microbial growth and enzymatic activity. • Some research suggests that certain frozen foods, like vegetables and pre-cooked meals, might be safely stored at -15°C. However, more studies are needed to confirm this for all types of frozen food and assess the potential impact on quality, such as taste, texture, and nutrient content ✅Current initiatives and considerations: • The "Join the Move to -15°C" initiative, led by DP World, is calling for the frozen food industry to adopt the -15°C standard. They argue that the potential environmental and economic benefits outweigh the potential risks to food safety and quality. ✅ However, implementing this change would require widespread collaboration across the food industry, including manufacturers, retailers, and consumers. Additionally, careful monitoring and quality control measures would be necessary to ensure food safety. 💭 While freezing food at -15°C could lead to significant energy savings, more research is needed to fully understand the potential impact on food safety and quality. Carefully planned and implemented changes, considering all stakeholders and potential risks and benefits, are crucial before adopting a lower freezing temperature standard for the entire frozen food industry. Let’s explore towards a better Earth!! #environementalsafety #sustainability #greenearth #refrigeration #frozenfood #refrigerationindustry #frozenfood #gwp #freezingpoint #foodtemperature #commercialkitchen #factory #commercialkitchenconsulting
