Drones & Data

This DeltaQuad Evo was the 3rd VTOL I had a chance to get hands on experience with during my recent #LiDAR testing. It’s something else.. Absolutely gorgeous airframe that resembles a stealth bomber, can’t keep your eyes off of it and very easy to see at long distances. A payload bay that also fits the bomber description. In it you can place multiple sensors and one battery OR one sensor with multiple batteries. With the second option you’ll get up to 4.5hrs of endurance, crazy! (It even self calibrates weight and balance by shifting the batteries internally with dedicated servos prior to takeoff, very clever!) Here, I had it configured with the YellowScan Surveyor Ultra - the same system as the Qube640 tested in the Trinity Pro, so I had no doubt it would meet the requirements of demanding data collection at massive scale based on what I have seen from the sensor package. A very modular design also allows for complex repairs or modifications to be made in the field. Swappable motors, full field maintenance kit and and plug and play payload architecture. They even provide open access to 3D models for printing and design and have made connectors and other aspects of systems integration very accessible. This platform is designed with technical geospatial operators and damanding military standards in mind, it’s very refreshing! The airframe is the star of the show here and it was clearly built of high quality composites including fiberglass, carbon and kevlar materials, and the retracting landing gear is a nice touch and designed in a way that keeps mechanical complexity at a minimum. The EVO runs Auterion and features Skynode for its avionics and mission planning stack, a system I do not have much experience with but the mission setup on the rugged controller felt polished and very flexible. I didn’t have as much time with this ship as I’d like to. Hopefully I have a chance to get more time with it in the near future as I’d really like to see how the stated 30km datalink range plays out in reality. I can see this being an extremely powerful ISR platform for military and police in remote regions as well as for environmental monitoring in remote areas of northern Canada such as monitoring wildfires. Personnally I would love to see a #LiDAR + high resolution #photogrammetry setup in that bay as that combo would be capable of generating some incredible datasets. Well done #DeltaQuad and huge thank you Kevin Toderel for offering to bring this beauty out to us to play with. I’m going to keep bugging you to see it again soon because this platform has me excited for the future of BVLOS operations, mesh networking and next level data collection opportunities it makes possible. Point cloud rendering made with NUBIGON Inc., latest update introduced point classification visualizations, check it out! DJI Avata 2 for the chase cam footage. That drone has made flying fun again and I was shocked at how easily it could keep up with the EVO!

Wow. 4.5hrs endurance. Here I am, accustomed to like 4.5mins of battery life 😅

Wow looks good, up to 4,5h can be a deflection in the market. Can it carry LiDAR and something else? (Camera …) what’s the max payload?
