As a field hockey 🏑 player at Maryland (yep! GO TERPS! 🐢), I learned about the concept of "perceived pressure"—when an opponent is near but not close enough to actually impact your play. You feel the pressure, but much of it is just in your head. Life’s limitations often work the same way. We convince ourselves we can't do something without even trying, setting up our own barriers. But here’s the thing: those limitations are like that distant opponent—more imagined than real. Take Paralympians, for example. These athletes don’t just push boundaries; they shatter them. Despite facing challenges most of us can only imagine, they redefine what’s possible with every race, jump, or throw. Look at athletes like Tatyana McFadden - professional, who has won multiple gold medals across five Paralympic Games; Sheetal Devi, a 17-year-old armless archer from India who hit a bullseye on her first shot; or Zakia Khudadadi, who won the first medal for the Refugee Paralympic Team despite facing unimaginable obstacles. Their accomplishments are a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and refusing to let perceived pressure or limitations dictate their potential. With just a few days left in the Paralympics, I encourage you to tune in and witness the power, athleticism, and talent of these incredible competitors. They’re living proof that perceived limitations are just that—perceived. So, what’s your “distant opponent” or your “perceived pressure?” How is it holding you back, and what can you do to rewrite the story you’re telling yourself? The Paris Paralympics are in full swing, and the athletes competing are nothing short of incredible. Yesterday, I witnessed a moment that will stay with me forever: an archery competition where an athlete born without arms used their feet to hold the bow and competed fiercely against opponents with arms—and won gold - congratulations Matt Stutzman! This level of skill, determination, and ingenuity is something most of us could hardly imagine, and yet, these athletes make it look effortless. From archery to blind soccer, the Paralympic Games showcase the remarkable talents of athletes who redefine the boundaries of what's possible. Watching the blind soccer teams navigate the field with such precision and coordination, relying entirely on sound and instinct, is both humbling and awe-inspiring. These athletes embody the very essence of resilience and perseverance, demonstrating that limitations are often only in the mind. Yet, despite their extraordinary achievements, Paralympians often do not receive the same recognition and viewership as their counterparts in the regular Olympics. This disparity must change. These athletes deserve prime viewing slots and the same level of global attention. They are not just competitors; they are heroes who challenge societal perceptions of disability and inspire millions around the world.

Ice Baths don’t win you Gold Medals! Resources matter, but they aren't everything. The latest gear and facilities can help, but in my journey to gold in 2008 and 2016, it was my mindset and my team that made the real difference. With the Olympics just ended and the Paralympics starting next week, it’s easy for athletes to compare their resources to others. The same applies in business—too often, we focus on things that aren't important. Keep it simple. Focus on what truly matters: your mindset, your team, and the process. The outcomes will follow. Questioning the Disparity Between the Olympics and Paralympics? As a volunteer for both the Olympics and Paralympics, I've had the rare chance to see the inner workings of both events up close.  It’s troubling to witness the stark difference in budgets, services, and overall investment between the two, with the Paralympics receiving? less. Paralympic athletes have overcome tremendous challenges, surpassing physical and societal barriers to excel at the highest level of their sports. Despite these extraordinary accomplishments, the resources devoted to the Paralympics are not on the same scale as what is allocated to the Olympics. Why do those who have had to overcome so much receive so much less in return?  Shouldn't the Paralympics be supported and celebrated just as much, if not more, for the determination, resilience, and skill these athletes  display? Should we accept the Paralympics as a lesser counterpart to the Olympics simply because the investment is not on the same level? 🏅 Let’s talk about the difference in the number of medals awarded per day between the Olympic and Paralympic Games. By Day 5 of the Olympics, the top 3 countries—USA, China, and France—had accumulated 75 medals. But by Day 5 of the Paralympics, China alone had already surpassed 80 medals. This sharp difference is due to the numerous categories within the same event at the Paralympics, resulting in a higher distribution of medals. 🌍 The leading countries in the Olympics—China, USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, Australia, and the Netherlands—remain dominant in the Paralympics as well. However, two surprising entries shake up the top 10: Brazil and Ukraine, sitting in 4th and 5th place, have seemingly swapped places with Japan and South Korea, who are now out of the top 10. 🔍 In the coming days, I’ll explore whether these countries also had strong performances in previous Paralympics and whether there’s a discernible trend in the strengths and weaknesses of countries across both the Olympic and Paralympic rankings.
