Tropical Storm Helene is cruising towards the Florida Panhandle, expected to become a major hurricane upon landfall tomorrow. In Deep Sky Research's original research on hurricane risk in the US, findings show: - What used to be the 100-year hurricane will now happen every 25 years - Frequency of deadly hurricane weather has jumped 300% - Hurricanes could cost more than $450B in the next 5 years (a 50% increase) - Gulf Coast states face greatest rainfall increases Most deaths and damage caused by hurricanes are a result of the massive volumes of water they drop on coastal areas. They also cause dangerous power outages, contributing to damage and loss of life. View our interactive map to see Panhandle counties with the highest risks of prolonged power outages.
