The first one we always bought from had good potatoes, but they were always too filthy when it came to the peeling them. Pricing and parenting converge: Yesterday I bought goldfish crackers, 1.7lb cartons were on sale at Kroger from 10.99 to 7.99 if you buy 3. Last night the kids ate an entire carton. Price promotions like this can increase total demand because with more goldfish around, more are eaten. This can work on any product where the consumption is variable do to over consumption (like food) or just owning more (4-for-$200 dress shirts) However, if you have a product with fixed consumption like appliances or cars, a sale pulls in demand from other brands or later sales. Either way, you see a short term demand increase, but whether your discounting increased total demand for your products (and thus profit) depends on whether you've increased total demand in the longer term. Either way, the remaining goldfish crackers are now safely on the top shelf.
