In this excellent paper Tim Menzen addresses the intriguing question, is lyophilization key for transportation and storage of biopharmaceutical drug products in space? Quoting from the abstract: "Long-lasting space missions as well as space tourism are technically possible today and economically in reach. It is a matter of time until the use of biopharmaceutical drug products in space will be common practice. Until drug product manufacturing in space is possible, the products need to be brought to space with rockets, which means that stable and light-weight products are preferred. Lyophilization is a promising approach to reduce weight during transportation and achieve storage stability at room temperature without cold-chain demands. This implies that recycled water in space needs to be used for reconstitution which poses a microbiological challenge and should be considered during formulation development. Furthermore, administration of the injectable drugs in space has an impact on the chosen packaging material which needs to be considered during drug product development."

EUDRAGIT® #polymers have established themselves as an industry standard for #coatings of oral drugs. But what does the name “EUDRAGIT®” actually mean? 🤔 💡 EUDRAGIT® is actually a combination of three syllables. The first syllable, "eu," comes from the Ancient Greek language and means "good." The second syllable, "dra," is taken from the French word "dragée," which means coating. And finally, "git" represents the gastrointestinal tract. When the name was first created, it made perfect sense. It accurately described the product and had a sophisticated ring to it. However, the creators of EUDRAGIT® soon realized that the name wasn't as intuitive in other languages. English-speaking customers and business partners, in particular, were left scratching their heads, wondering why a product would be called "You-drag-it"! 🧬🥼 I spoke with 2 biotech companies last week. Each of whom said they've cut their funding from all R&D ❌ I did some digging, and it seems like they aren't the only ones. By the looks of things there's lots of companies just maintaining what they have. Funding is quite clearly the biggest factor facing bio & pharma right now - that's no surprise to anyone - so should this come as a surprise too? Probably not. Companies are having to adjust to the short-term issues we face - working capital and investment being in a poor state right now. We can only hope that things pick back up sooner rather than later so that there isn't a gap in innovation coming through in the future years.
