We can all agree that being debt-free is beneficial, but living in the present is just as important. In a world where the pressure is always on, it's totally okay for Gen Z to treat themselves to those little moments of happiness, like enjoying a coffee. Their fresh take on managing money—balancing saving with self-care—is both smart and necessary. They're navigating today's financial challenges with a blend of wisdom and the need for well-being, showing us there's more to life than just sticking to the strict rules of the past. Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®️), Aiming to increase conversations about $$$ and leave the world a little better than I found it.
What do y’all think? I’m conflicted on this. (But, that’s my values and biases coming into the conversation…if I can’t afford it, I would 100% forego today’s pleasures for tomorrow’s financial success) As financial professionals, I feel that the reason we talk about cutting out coffees is not specifically about coffee, it’s about cutting out unnecessary spending in favor of a bigger goal. I’ve seen time and again, it’s the little expenses that often add up and eat away at a paycheck without even being noted. When all of those “just a little treat” expenses add up…it can be a substantial issue. Should someone who is working to cut expenses vow to never have a coffee out? No. BUT, they should evaluate how much they value the coffee, why they are getting the coffee and how does this singular choice factor into their long term goals. (If it’s simply convenience that plays differently than meeting a friend for a couple hours and enjoying a coffee while they catch up). As a counselor, it’s not my job to tell people what to do or to value, but if a client is coming to me and telling me they are living at home with their parents bc they can’t afford to move out and are also spending a large chunk of their monthly income on convenience items - it IS my job to draw attention to the discrepancy about what they are saying they want and value vs how they are actually behaving. Then, it’s on them to determine if their values have changed or if they need to alter their behavior.
