'Equality, Diversity & Inclusion in Engineering: A Decade in Focus'
Our team (Dr Louise Oldridge, Dr Michaela Edwards (Fearnall-Williams), Nadia K. Kougiannou, Sarah Pass, Scott Lawley and Val Caven) are delighted to share a literature review for Royal Academy of Engineering into Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity (EDI) within UK engineering over the past decade.
This comprehensive review examined 506 documents spanning academic literature, professional engineering institution publications, corporations, trade unions, not-for-profit organisations, engineering magazines, and policy documents. Our findings show:
⭐ A steady increase in EDI-related publications over the last decade, signalling a promising upward trend.
⭐Gender was a prominent theme in one-third of the reviewed documents. The review accentuates the persistent underrepresentation of women in engineering, a focal point for research throughout the decade.
⭐ Ongoing challenges related to racism, biases, stereotyping, and discrimination that adversely impact the experiences of Black, Asian, and minority ethnic engineers in the workplace.
⭐ Documentation or research focusing on disabled or LGBTQ+ engineers, alongside age, religion or belief, and socio-economic status in engineering, was sparse, pointing to a need for research and initiatives to understand and amplify the voices and experiences of diverse engineers.
