Today is King Kamehameha I Day, a public holiday in Hawaiʻi honoring Kamehameha the Great (c. 1758-1819), who, in 1810, unified the Hawaiian islands and became Hawai‘i’s first king. King Kamehameha Day was first declared by Kamehameha V in 1871 to honor his grandfather, Kamehameha I. The first observance of the holiday happened in the following year. King Kamehameha I Day was one of the first holidays proclaimed by the Governor of Hawaiʻi and the Hawaiʻi State Legislature when Hawaiʻi achieved statehood in 1959. In 1883 a statue of King Kamehameha was dedicated in Honolulu by King David Kalākaua (this was a duplicate because the original statue was temporarily lost at sea but was recovered and is now located in North Kohala, island of Hawaiʻi). This statue is duplicated in Emancipation Hall at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C., and in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. Today, Kamehameha statues across Hawai‘i will be decorated with lei to honor the king’s memory. The 2024 theme is “He Inoa No Kalaninui Kamehameha – Honor to Kamehameha the Great.” This special day is marked with elaborate events that reflect ancient Hawai‘i and respect the cultural traditions that Kamehameha defended. The name 'Önundr,' with its Norse origins, is commonly interpreted to mean "victory of the ancestors." Some sources propose that Windermere might have been referred to as 'Onundr' for a certain period, possibly in honour of the Norse King. Our origins are intricately linked with the picturesque Windermere in the Lake District, and this meaningful association is the inspiration behind our company name, 'Onunda.' Few people know that the iconic character of Popeye the Sailor was based on a real person! His name was Frank 'Rocky' Fiegel, born on January 27, 1868, in Poland. He and his family immigrated to America, where Frank joined the Navy in 1887. Later in life, Frank worked at Wiebusch's Tavern in Chester, Illinois, USA, where he became known for his frequent fights, earning a reputation for his strength and toughness. This, along with his distinctive "pop-eye" resulting from a deformed eye, and his habit of always having a pipe in his mouth, inspired the creation of Popeye. Frank was also known for telling stories to local children, often boasting about his strength and attributing it to spinach, much like the fictional Popeye. Elzie Crisler Segar, the creator of Popeye, was from Chester and grew up hearing Frank's tales, which inspired the beloved character. Frank 'Rocky' Fiegel passed away in 1947 at the age of 79, but his legacy lives on through Popeye, the spinach-loving sailor who became a cartoon icon. #Popeye #FrankFiegel #Inspiration #History #CartoonCharacters #Legend

Today is the Feast of St. John the Evangelist. During the early days of Freemasonry, this occasion was typically used to hold installations of Presidents and Grand Masters. Because it lands just after the winter solstice, this day also symbolizes the movement from darkness to light through lengthening days. In this blog, we explore the histories of this Saint, and St. John the Baptist and why, as Freemasons, we often reference and celebrate them. https://bit.ly/3FRdEzN
