Disability Pride started as a day of celebration in 1990, the same year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed. By 2015, this celebration expanded into an entire month, and since then, Disability Pride Month has been celebrated globally each July.   Disability Pride Month can mean different things to each individual. I view it as an opportunity to start conversations and raise awareness among people who are not part of the disabled community on how to be better allies and support inclusivity.   CFA Institute remains committed to inclusivity and fairness for all, creating better work environments. Today, July 26th, is Disability Independence Day! Disability Pride Month was officially recognized in 2015, marking the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The #ADA was a huge step forward in ensuring civil rights protections for folks with disabilities. While it's a time to celebrate, it’s also a reminder of the ongoing work needed to achieve full inclusion and equality. Despite the progress we've made so far, plenty of barriers still exist that prevent people with disabilities from fully participating in society. These can include physical barriers, like inaccessible buildings and transportation, as well as attitudinal barriers, like discrimination and misconceptions about disabilities. This groundbreaking legislation has paved the way for transformative change, promoting accessibility and equal rights for individuals with disabilities. This legislation was transformative as it was the first of its kind to set up standards in the recruiting, interviewing, hiring and accommodation process for individuals with physical and mental disabilities and began the normalization of hiring and accommodating a significant population who had otherwise been excluded from employment. The ADA's passage in 1990 was a critical step forward in our ongoing journey toward inclusivity and equality. Celebrating Disability Pride Month In July, we honor the history, achievements, and struggles of the disability community. Disability Pride Month marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), passed on July 26, 1990, breaking barriers to inclusion. Despite the ADA, discrimination persists for the 1 in 4 U.S. adults living with a disability. That is why we celebrate this awareness, to highlight what's possible with true inclusion in the community workplaces. History of Disability Pride Month: The first Disability Pride Day was in Boston in 1990. Chicago hosted the first Disability Pride Parade in 2004. Now, events nationwide empower people with disabilities to take pride in who they are and what they do. 2024 Theme: "We Want a Life Like Yours Inspired by The Arc’s National Council of Self-Advocates, this theme reflects the disability community’s dreams for life experiences, including employment, they deserve. Hiring People With Disabilities: 85% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are unemployed, despite wanting to work and having skills to contribute. Those employed work fewer than 13 hours a week on average, with less than one-fifth receiving workplace benefits.
