As a leadership coach with a past life in the corporate environment I've continued to be blessed to nurture my relationships with former colleagues still in the trenches. They're trying to drive change and do business differently, but often get stuck by corporate politics and a culture of control that leans too heavily on the way things were. When we cultivate cultures of trust and self-awareness, hire members that have aligned values and drive, and are clear on vision, values, and performance expectations our businesses and people can thrive and profit with a flexible model. In my mind it just shouldn't be that hard. It's also much more worth it to society in the long run. I'm incredibly grateful for Wendy Davidson for modeling that it can be done. I had the pleasure of hearing her speak at a Rotary Means Business conference and have been inspired ever since. Prior to leaving my corporate career I struggled with finding women leaders that could be my role model. It's part of the reason I took the brave leap into the land of the entrepreneur. None of them were living their lives with priorities that mirrored mine. Their actions indicated that they believed profit only came at a heavy cost to well-being and family. They seemed to de-prioritize those very pie slices of life that would nurture them to be better leaders: authentic relationships outside the office, speaking with courage, candor, and care (thank you Assemble HR Consulting for also being amazing role models!), acting with integrity aligned with their core values, travel and adventure, moms that were present, daily habits for mental and physical health and wellness, etc. Making even just a little bit of time for all of the above empower better leaders and employees to juggle this ever-changing business world with a little more grace. They help our nervous-systems regulate, we see more clearly, we think outside the box, our mindset shifts to growth rather than scarcity. Recently, a director, from another dept approached me for the name of someone who shared some incomplete internal instructions with me, which caused some setup headaches. In response, I expressed concern about getting someone in "trouble" based on how new this process was to the department. The director's response was a master class in empathy and leadership: "I was asking for the name so I could apologize to them for not giving them clear enough instructions". "Treat employees like they make a difference and they will." — Jim Goodnight This quote had a huge influence on me. Sometimes, we try to influence our team to think and fit into our box of requirements, with the assumption that this exact set of requirements will lead to the achievement of our vision (as we are so passionate about it). But maybe not! Perhaps we should explain the ultimate vision as best we can, get them onboard, and let them drive it, while we simply act as guides.
