Why trying to poach employees is bad for business [long form] The best time to hire an employee is not when they're already working another job. 🙅🏻♀️ 👉🏼 In his award-winning publication, Originals, leading organizational psychologist Adam Grant explicates upon the familiarity bias: as human beings, we tend to want to stick to what we know. This is because the decision fatigue associated with evaluating the potential pros and cons of signing a new offer is resource- and energy-intensive: What would my new coworkers be like? What about the learning curve? What's the net difference on commute versus benefits? 🚫 Unless they're extremely dissatisfied with their current jobs, most people wouldn't want to switch. 💸 This means your organization just lost money nurturing a potential employee who would inevitably turn down your offer. 👉🏼 The people with the #OpentoWork banner have already embraced the unknown as they hand in their resignations or send out applications. Scientifically, therefore, they are more adept at navigating complex situations and handling uncertainty. And, really, what is business and entrepreneurship but scaling in unchartered territory? As much as the discourse on LinkedIn revolves around improving hiring practices, it's really time you all gave the green banner a shot. P.S. I turned down offers before and now I've been without full-time work for 2+ months. 🤷🏻♀️ It was scary for me before. But now I'm celebrating the challenge. 🎉 I've learned more in the last 2 months than I had in the last couple of years. This time off has only super-charged my existing problem-solving skills.

I’m going to ask a controversial question: 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙣𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝙟𝙤𝙗? Yup, I have nerve, I know. Here’s the thing though -  I’m observing that the pursuit of the “ideal” is distracting folks from great jobs. Just like the pursuit of their “ideal” means hiring managers are missing great candidates. I’m not suggesting you be “open” - far from it! What I am saying is that it is smart to consider up front where you may have wiggle room.  What if, for example: 👉 You were open to small and mid-size employers that might not be household names, but offered other advantages? 👉 You considered an in-office or hybrid role over fully remote so that you can benefit from the hands-on guidance of people who can help you grow? This can be especially valuable for career changers and those in the first 10 years of their career. 👉 You took a chance on a start-up where you could gain a breadth of experience far beyond what a traditional employer could possibly offer? 👉 You negotiated to create a package that meets your needs? My clients have negotiated a sign-on bonus, relocation package, extra pay to make up for less vacation days, freedom to continue a side hustle, more vacation days, stock options, a 6 month review with a specified increase, and more. My point is that if you want an employer to consider you even though you might be missing a few “requirements,” isn’t it reasonable for you to do the same?
