Amazon and Walmart have significantly increased their share of total and online retail sales in the U.S. during the past six years, according to Forrester’s “U.S. Online Retail Forecast, 2024-2029.” If current trends continue, the two companies will account for one-fourth of total retail sales and two-thirds of online retail sales in the U.S. by 2029, with their combined retail sales reaching $1.5 trillion and online retail sales hitting $1.1 trillion, per the report. Forrester also forecasts that, by 2029, U.S. total retail sales will reach $6.0 trillion, with online retail sales hitting $1.8 trillion.

Great article about what sets #Costco apart…trust (something missing is a lot of retail transactions)! Also there’s this (and you know who you are!): “It would be hard to argue that Costco buyers don’t know what they are getting into. After all, they have to ferry the cart with the seven-foot artificial tree, the solar panel, the steel pet coffin and the three-month supply of Belgian mini-cream puffs back to the car.” #retail #retailresilience #communitydesign #economicdevelopment #bestretailers

It’s been amazing watching this district go through a full cycle from new new thing in the late ‘80’s to old old thing post-Covid. Huge amount of data here with implications for #downtown. Thanks David for posting! First, #familyformation has profound implications for #housing choices, as does being #single (ie. #urban vs #suburban preferences, availability of schools, amenities geared to singles vs families, etc). Second, while Placer.ai resident data may be accurate, what I’ve observed first hand about downtown daytime readoption doesn’t mirror these numbers, and downtown #retailrecovery is elusive in many of these markets, at least so far. #retail #retailresilience #economicdevelopment #communitydesign
