Who knew? Blue Sapphires Are blue because of the presence of certain trace elements in their crystal structure - iron and titanium. These elements absorb certain wavelengths of light, particularly in the red and orange parts of the spectrum, while letting the blue wavelengths pass through or be reflected. Violet Blue Sapphires If there are traces of other elements present, such as chromium or vanadium, they can give sapphires a more violet colour. It’s the intensity & shade of blue that varies within the structure of the Sapphire. The specific arrangement of atoms within the crystal lattice can also influence the shade and intensity of this beautiful blue.

Ok, can we talk about how rad this polished 2.58ct Octahedral Diamond is for a second? Faceted out of a 3.59ct rough Diamond from Canada’s Gahcho Kué Mine, the original rough crystal had some magnificent trigonal etching that we wanted to showcase alongside some of the diamond’s unique inclusions. Our cutters cut the stone into this faceted Octahedron, preserving the most impressive trigonal etching on one of its faces. When rough diamonds experience a partial dissolution or resorption during their formation beneath the Earth (caused when oxidizing fluids/melts start to dissolve a diamond and impacted by levels of H2O and CO2 in the fluids) trigonal etch pits can occur. We like to think of these etchings as little signatures and mementos left behind by Mother Nature that tell a part of the story of a diamonds journey, so once in awhile, instead of cutting a stone into a traditionally faceted shape, we opt to display its natural attributes in the form of one of a polished Octahedron like this 2.58ct.
