Huntington Place recently announced that Al Vasquez, its engineering and facilities services director, will serve a two-year term as the Detroit 30 District’s board of directors chair. Detroit 2030 District is part of a national network of districts that work to create high-performance buildings by reducing the environmental impacts of building construction and operations while increasing building owners’ return on investment, promoting economic development, and supporting environmental justice. Huntington Place also announced that it is meeting several 2024 operational goals and objectives that will bring it further in line with the United Nations Sustainable Business Goals. A new op-ed from Carlo Scissura on capital process reform is out today in the New York Daily News. "New York faces several overlapping generational challenges: economic, as our central business districts find their footing for the work-from-home era; and existential, as the reality of climate change encroaches on our shores and comes up into our basements, streets, and subway tunnels through the pipes below... There is something Albany can do: Get capital process reform passed at last, as part of a suite of recommendations to hasten infrastructure delivery." Born in 1827, little is known of New York City (NYC) resident and boarding house owner Mary Walton outside of her inventions. She was quoted in 1884 as saying, “My father had no sons, and believed in educating his daughters. He spared no pains or expense to this end.” However, it’s unlikely she received any formal education related to STEM. Mary received 2 patents for her work designing environmentally focused solutions to combat the increased air and noise pollution that resulted from the ongoing Industrial Revolution: - 📄 #1: Design of a water tank system to deflect smokestack emissions to NYC’s sewer system, leading to cleaner air for residents. - 📄 #2: Design of a support box to absorb noise made by elevated rail lines throughout NYC. This noise was a puzzle Thomas Edison himself had failed to crack, but Mary’s successful design was sold to the Metropolitan Railroad and used by rail lines worldwide. This initiative recognizes the urgent need to prioritize climate action in all aspects of governance. #ICYMI: The Seattle City Council recently passed Building Emissions Performance Standards (BEPS) to transition buildings (>20,000 sqft) away from fossil fuels and slash Seattle’s total carbon emissions by 27% by 2050. Seattle joins a growing number of states that have adopted and are considering building performance standard policies – along with similar policies in New York City, Boston, Washington DC, and Colorado. "The law’s implementation policy needs to empower property owners to make an impact quickly — and allowing flexibility to find the best decarbonization solutions is key to achieving the city’s goals.”-Josh London, senior vice president at Glenwood Management on Local Law 97. Many property owners like Glenwood Management are making good-faith efforts to reduce carbon emissions to meet the standards set by Local Law 97. Nick is absolutely right. The Value(s) described by Mark Carney are now patently reflected in the demand, price and desirability of commercial property. In my opinion this “premium” will undoubtedly extend across all sectors. We should only be building environmentally sustainable buildings.
