Executive Director at TGS Educational Consulting: Helping Caring Organizations to “Live Their Values Out Loud.”
What could your PBIS team do in January to support your students’ social, emotional, and academic success? Reteach your school-wide expectations. Finding those #PBIS lesson plans and reteaching how to live school values out loud is a great idea now that winter break is over. After two weeks of living with a very different rhythm, set your students up for success by taking some time right now to reset and reinforce routines and expectations. Plus, it’s possible you’ve got a number of students who enrolled after your first teaching time at the beginning of the year. Taking time for a school-wide reteach definitely brings new scholars into your community and ensures they’ve got the same vocabulary for living school values out loud. Reteaching expectations after break does take some time, effort, and scheduling, but the time you spend front-loading the love is time you will absolutely get back in learning. #PBIS #SEL #classroommanagement

Timothy Knowles is right when he says, "The answer to chronic absenteeism is creating schools where young people feel they belong, and where engaging, experiential, rigorous teaching and learning is the daily diet." But too many districts and schools seek to solve the chronic absenteeism problem by trying to fix kids or families while leaving systems of instruction, assessment, and discipline untouched, and never addressing the extent to which the learning environment is affirming, inspiring, and culturally sustaining. Hedy Chang and the team at Attendance Works have produced incisive work in this area. Paul Gorski perhaps best summarizes what we need to do: "Fix injustice, not kids" (https://lnkd.in/gw43W8dv). Over the years, children are spending much more of their childhood indoors, and within the walls and gates of early childhood services. Young children are wired to explore, learn through physical movement and to make connections. Research shows restrictions to movement and confinment in the early years is impacting children’s learning and development. How are we using ‘place-based pedagogy’ to support young children to explore and make connections in their local community, and to feel like they belong to it?
